Poker is a game played with cards. There are many different forms of poker played worldwide. No matter what variation of poker one chooses to play, there are several fundamental ideas that are common to all.
There needs to be two or more players to create competition. Poker is a game that is scored by wins. The wins are usually comprised of wagers (bets) of some denomination of money. The score is kept by how much money a player wins or loses.
Each player will receive cards. Depending on which game of poker is being played will dictate the number of cards each player gets and how they are played. Normally the ranking of hands, or the combination of cards making up a hand, will determine who has the best hand and who wins the wagers.
A good poker player will have developed great skill in strategies, deception, finesse, ability to read cards and their probability of winning, and the cunning to read the faces and behaviors of his or her opponents. Luck is a major factor when it comes to winning in poker. However, in the long run, skill is the only constant that will make a poker player an ongoing winner.
Poker is a game that may and can be played by anyone. Race, creed, age, or physical ability holds no limit for an avid player. When everyone sits down to play this wonderful game called poker, the playing field is level and all have an equal chance to use their God given intelligence to prove his or her genius.

Many of the cowboys enjoyed the game of poker, but, with only 52 cards in a deck, only 7-8 people could play a game at one time. Texas Hold'em is recognized as a variation of seven card stud. Each player is dealt two cards face down. These cards are the only cards the player will receive that will belong to him. With only two cards being dealt to each player, it allowed many more people to play a game on a trail drive. It can be and is sometimes played with up to 12 players.
There is a dealer. To the left of the dealer is the small and large blind. These two players are required to "bet in the blind" in order to create action. Creating action makes the game more dynamic and exciting. Every player must match (call) the big blind's bet or fold (pass).
There are four betting rounds in Texas Hold'em.
The game is won by the player who can make the best 5 card hand out of the 7 cards available to him. The hand may be comprised of his two hole cards and three cards from the table (board), one of his hole cards and four from the board, or the five cards on the board. The person who has the highest-ranking hand wins the total of all the wagers (pot).
Texas Hold'em may be played as a structured limit game, a pot limit game, or a no limit game. These names refer to the amounts allowed to be bet and will be covered under betting.

Seven Card Stud is an absolutely great game to play. It requires a great deal of strategy, skill and memory to develop a strong game and many hours of play to improve and become a winner. The following information will be helpful in helping you to understand about how to play Seven Card Stud.
THE ANTE
In Seven Card Stud, the ante, which is a token bet required before the start of the hand, is mandatory. The amount is determined by the betting limits of the game. All players are required to ante prior to the cards being dealt. The ante is usually 10% of the small bet, but not always. For example, if the game is $10-$20 Seven Card Stud, then the ante is $1.
THE DEAL
Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, the cards will be dealt in a clockwise fashion one at a time until each player has two pocket cards which are sometimes referred to as hole cards or down cards. These cards are dealt face down. A third card is dealt to each player face up (up card or open card.) In poker lingo, each card as it is dealt is called a street. This up card is referred to as the door card or 3rd street. Once these 3 cards have been dealt to each player, the game will begin. The dealer will indicate which player must open for a bet by the lowest door card. There could be a tie for the lowest door card, so, this issue is resolved by the first lowest card.
BETTING ON THIRD STREET (3rd card of 7)
The player holding the lowest door card will be required to "bring it in" by opening the betting with a bet twice the size of the ante, which in this example would be $2. The next player to the left of this player (clockwise) will be the next to act. When involved in a hand, there are several actions a player can take. The player may CALL the bet by matching the amount of the first bet. In the example, it would be $2. The player may RAISE the bet by matching the amount of the first bet and adding the amount of the lower bet, which would be $10 in a $10 -$20 game. The player may FOLD. When a player folds, the action taken is one of passing and the player does not wish to enter the hand by placing any money in the pot. The first round of betting is complete after every player at the table has acted and placed the same amount in the pot or folded.
BETTING ON FOURTH STREET (4th card of 7)
After the first round has been completed, each player is dealt another up card. This card is referred to as 4th street. The opener on 4th street and the subsequent streets is different than the opener on 3rd street. The opener now becomes the highest hand determined by the up cards or open cards. The person holding the highest hand may Check, (pass the bet to the next player) or bet. The bet will be at the low limit, and in our example, it will be $10. The second round of betting is complete after every player at the table has acted and placed the same amount in the pot or folded.
BETTING ON FIFTH STREET (5th card of 7)
After the second round has been completed, each player is dealt another up card and the high hand opens the betting. The betting is now at the higher limit of $20. The third and fourth round of betting is complete after every player at the table has acted and placed the same amount in the pot or folded.
BETTING ON SIXTH STREET (6th card of 7)
After the third round has been completed, each player is dealt another up card and the high hand opens the betting. The betting is now at the higher limit of $20. The third and fourth round of betting is complete after every player at the table has acted and placed the same amount in the pot or folded.
BETTING ON SEVENTH STREET (7th card of 7)
The last card, called the "river" card or 7th street is another pocket or hole card is dealt (face down) to each player. Once again, the betting is at the higher limit of $20.
SHOWDOWN
After all bets and raises are complete, and all players have acted and placed the same amount in the pot or folded, the remaining players enter the Showdown. The opener shows his pocket cards. If a player thinks he has the openers hand beaten, the player must reveal his or her pocket cards to win or fold by mucking them in the discards. The pot is awarded to the best hand, the cards are collected and a new hand is dealt.
