With the recent growth in the poker industry, major poker tournaments are appearing almost on a monthly basis. There are many more major events now than ever before all over the world.
The most important poker events in the poker calendar are of varying sizes and structures. Structures meaning the blind and ante increases. The slower the increases, the more skill required to win the event. A lot of the luck factor is removed when the structure is slow.
It is very obvious that No Limit Holdem is the game of choice for the world's biggest poker players. This is why you will see PokerSchool Online focus on this particular game. It is where the money is.
If a player can master this very tricky game, they will be able to compete in this very lucrative arena. Below you will find a list of current Major Poker Tournaments. Our aim is to sponsor students into these events, but first you must reach a competitive level within the School.
World Series of Poker
The granddaddy of them all is the World Series of Poker held at Binions Horseshoe in Las Vegas every May. The eventual winner is declared the World Champion. The game, as in most major poker tournaments, is No Limit Holdem. The buy in for the event is a cool $10,000. The prize pool in 2001 was over $6,000,000. The winner (Carl Mortenson from Spain) took home a very impressive $1,500,000. We are not aware of a bigger 1st place prize in any other current sport.
PokerMillion
Next in terms of expected prize money comes the PokerMillion held in England every year. In 2002 this event will be held in London in March. As its name implies, the winner will be guaranteed 1,000,000 pounds sterling. The buy in for this event is £7,000 and entry is limited to 300 players. This event is also No limit Holdem with an expected prize pool of £3,000,000.
World Poker Open
Next up in January is the World Poker Open held in Tunica, Mississippi. For the first time in 2002, this No Limit Holdem event will be a $10,000 buy in with an expected prize pool of over $1,000,000.
World Poker Challenge
At the same time in January in Nevada, the Reno Hilton hosts the World Poker Challenge. Once again a No Limit Holdem event with a $5,000 buy in and an expected prize pool of around $1,000,000.
The LA Poker Classic
February 2002 sees a new major poker event, The LA Poker Classic held at the Commerce Casino Los Angeles. Although this is not actually a new event, there are 2 new $1,000,000 guaranteed tournaments at the event. The first is a $1,500 buy in Limit Holdem event with rebuys and the second a $7,500 buy in No Limit Holdem event.
