PSO Contributor Paul Samuel
Paul Samuel was born on August 3rd 1959 in London's East End. It during these early years, while visiting his father on weekends, that he would stay up until the early hours in a smoke clogged lounge watching his father play 3-Card Brag with his friends. It was here that Paul discovered his fascination with poker, and as soon as he could deal, was playing cards with friends behind the sheds at school.
Paul played 5-Card Draw and Brag, normally split the overall proceeds with his best friend Gary Solomons.
About 8 or 9 years ago Paul visited Las Vegas with Gary and discovered Texas Hold'em. Paul says he played it like 3-Card Brag and would nearly faint with excitement when he picked up 6-7!
"Not surprisingly," says Paul. "I lost all my money but it was fun."
On the plane home, while browsing through the airport bookshop, Paul was amazed to discover a book ('A Beginners guide to Texas hold'em') for sale.
Paul bought the book, read it cover to cover on the plane, and couldn't contain his excitement. Poker was, after all, a scientific game!
Since then Paul has never looked back, and become engrossed in Poker and tournaments in particular. He has played in Finland, Germany, Holland, Austria and of course his regular Wednesday night game in Luton England.
Paul has six children (Joseph, Lara, Abi, Piper, Alana and William (l'il Will or Billy Boy) and a beautiful wife Michelle.
"You can't separate your personal life, your business life and poker," he says. "Your emotions filter your ability. The best theoretical player in the world wont be worth a damn on the green felt if he has no emotional control."
