Nobody cares what you folded

It’s been a while since I wrote something on my blog but playing poker is still part of my everyday life. The reason why I stopped writing is because I felt that nobody really cares whether I prosper in this industry or not (only myself of course! ). It’s a very cynical game.  So I decided that instead of writing every month, I will just PLAY. Plain and simple. No BS, No Drama. Just pure poker. The reason why I wrote again is because when I re-read the blogs that I wrote, it reminded me what state of mind I had during that time. It’s somewhat like a mental poker time machine. The reason why I decided to look at it again is because one of my regular opponent said in the chat box that he had read my blogs, I simply replied to him that I stopped writing. He then said “I like it, not bad you know?”.  So here I am, writing again….

Summary from July 2014 – present

For 10 months starting Mid-January to October, I didn’t deposit and just continued to deal with swings, or Variance as we call it. I thought I was unstoppable during those months. I even earned as much as my pay in work on the month of August. It really, really felt good that my vision is coming to a reality which is playing cards for a living. I guess you can say that I was overconfident that I thought I was never going to look back again and will continue to grow my bankroll. But with the combination of bad play, bad luck, overconfidence, arrogance and laziness – the perfect recipe for disaster – I got cleaned out. I couldn’t believe what I saw in my cashier - $0.11. What a pity. There was even 1 session wherein I e-mailed the Pokerstars support and asked if their “system” is really fair because the beats that I was having( eg 2 pair runners, backdoor flushes, set on the river by my opponent) where really frustrating  ( yes you can laugh now LOL), but I really did it due to excess tilt I guess ( Sorry guys! hehe). So I deposited again in November, got cleaned out again. Deposited in December, went well, I even got backed to $7 SNG 6max turbo because I started multi playing 3.50 SNG 6max turbo of 4 tables. Loss again in January and deposited again. And this month I have deposited again. Every month I was depositing around $50-$60 per month like it’s a monthly bill! I have lost my confidence in my game, every time I lose all my tables I will lie down in bed then I'll stop playing and just sleep on it. I was becoming frustrated with poker that I have considered quitting the game. It also means the dream of becoming a pro someday has died. I considered quitting the game for good and find another dream. It came to the point that I stopped daydreaming of the game.  But as they say “Old habits die hard”.

Welcome back $irUlrich!

I made a deal to myself. That I will detach my emotion from the game and just continue to inject logic (sounds familiar? Learned this from Jared Tendler’s “Mental game of Poker 1).  I didn’t work on my technical game but instead I worked hard on my mental game because I think that is where it is coming from. I read and study Jared’s work and applied it on my poker life. I set small and attainable goals instead of daydreaming about being in a WSOP table ( c’mon you are also doing this hahaha), I quit playing if I think I’m going to super insane monkey tilt mode, I applied the Inchworm concept ( Improving your best and worst), and the most effective routine that I applied is mental preparation. I have written some important reminders on a notepad on my desktop and read it before I play just to remind myself what I have learned and have been learning. It did work but not immediately. It took me months to get the result that I wanted but I am still working on it. It is a continuous process and it will never end as learning never stops and the game is evolving very fast. Players from this site are learning fast. Just like what Moneymaker said “Everybody THINKS they can play and that is what’s beautiful about poker”.  What happed was after months of Bad variance (skill wise and luck wise), I scored a 4th on a 6max turbo tournament which enables me to go back to $7 SNGS, for the nth time! If there is one advice I can give to all aspiring poker players like me is this :

Make peace with Variance, it’s the only way to understand poker.

Paalam muna sa ngayon. I’m not sure if I will write again. This might be the last. But who knows?
