My first Casino Tournament

By: Dany Boy NZ @ 06:00 (EDT) / 415 / Comment ( 0 )

This sunday just gone i had decided to stake my bestfriend in a tournament at our local casino as a birthday gift as hes now 20 and that is the age of entry for our casinos over here in New Zealand even though the gambling age is 18 :/

Anyway the tournament we decided on was a deepstack turbo tounament 60 dollar buyin, we realised it would take awhile and my friend didnt want me to watch him all tournament as he feels it effects his play lol, so i bought in aswell, we were at tables next to each other which was cool so we could contantly keep an eye on each others progress. I should mention at this point that the final number of players in the tournament wa 99 and there were afew rebuys maybe 10 i think.

I got off to a great start after about 20 hands i picked up aces in the bb and after an open raise to 250 and about 5 players calling tha raise i raised it too 1500ish (starting stack was 10000), the original raiser called from utg +1 and the flop came down 884 with two hearts, i bet 2400 and he raised it up another 4000 too 6400 all up, at which point i shoved as never saw an 8 being in his range and didnt see him folding a lower pair such as ks or qs but he did fold and i took down the pot.

Alittle whle later a hand came up where a guy raised from middle position too 300 when blinds were 75/150, a older lady called right behind him and i called from the co with 88,everyone else folded behind me. The flop came 10 8 8 , the original raiser cbet about 800 and the lady after raised too 2000, i called behind and the original raiser also called, then the turn came a 10 at this point the original raiser bet 1200 the women called and i raised to 2400 the original raiser shoved and the women folded and he had A10 and missed on he river. At this point i was up to over 30k and it felt like the tournament had only just started

Things were quite steady for awhile with the only other hand worth mentioning being a hand where afew people limped before me and i had AK and blinds were at 100/200 so for a change and because i didnt want to risk getting in a flip with one of the shorter stacks i just called behind, afew more callers and then the sb raised too 500, everyone before me called again and this put the pot up to about 2500 i believe, at this point i decided it was worth risking the flip as the ony person who had shown any strength was the women in the sb and i didnt feel like she had a monster as she would have raised more to narrow the field, so i dumbed in two of the big 5kchips making it 10000 to play, everyone folded and afew mutered about how much of an idiot i was and i added a nice 30% of a starting stack to my constantly growing stack

it was at the point where i reached 35kish where nothing of any excitment happened for about 2 or 3 hours and my stak stayed pretty still. When we got down to 2 tables i was still at 30k. Blinds at this point were at 1k/2k with an ante of 200 and a weird hand came up where i was sb and the button on a bigger stack, maybe 50k raised too 12k, i had A8 and decided to go with it so shoved and after a fair bit of anguish and much to my suprise he folded, it was only another 18000 to call and the pot infront of him was nearly 50k so i couldnt believe he folded but i guess its a good example of a player not understanding pot odds, but too me it was as good as a free double up.

The very next hand the co open limped and i had A6 and so minraised it, hoping to take the pot away from my opponent with a cbet on most flops. the big blind called and we saw a flop of A34 all spades, BB checkd and the player who had just folded to me last hand, shoved from the co, i made tha call and the big blind got out of the way, the co turned over qd10s so had 9 outs, he turned a q which ,ade it abit scarier but river was another ace and so knocked him out and rocketed to a very competitive chip stak.

From their i raised alot of hands taking down b,linds pretty much whenever i was dealt an ace or two big cards untill a pivotal hand came up when my stak had grown too about 170k, i opened too 16k which was 2bb and it folded to the bb who was on about 150k and he repopd it too 32k :/ at this point i thought very hard but your only given 10 seconds to make a decision so tanking was not really an option, i didnt want to call behind and have to fold on most flops, i didnt want to fold such a nice hand and i also didnt want to shove because in that thort period of time i figured he would 3bet there with AA KK QQ and possibly JJ aswell as AK, with 14 players left and only ten getting payed i figured i could pressure such a nicly sized stack and hopfully have the same hand or be fliping if he did call, so i shoved my 20bb stack and he called with AA i was devestated and think if i had had more time to think i may hve made the fold but ill never know. I hit a King on the flop but their was no more help and i was crushed down too somwhere around 20k and the very next hand found my self utg with k4 i shoved it the sb (guy who just crushed me) called with 106 and the bb folded, thankfully i won that flip and was able to make a min cash finishing in 10th place, first out at the final table.

Overall i was very very happy with my play and how well i ran and just really wish id been able to make that fold as i would really have liked my chances at the final table as they wound back the tournament clock so that all players were deeper and i feel that would have been in my favour.

Anyway if youve made it this far, thank you very much for reading. Ill post more blogs in the future when i do well in more tournaments. im pretty determined to win one soon as i did really feel i had a huge edge in the tournament and the fact it was deep staked made it very easy to apply the small ball stratagy i like so much.

Best of luck at the tables

Cheers
