Dr Donkin Poker Diary

This will be my poker diary where i can post my poker stories
Send PM

Iv been meaning to update my blog for sometime now and with reading all the other blogs with there 2014 goals and it really got me thinking, what should my goals be? what do i want to achieve in 2014? hence the reason for not making a blog in january because i didnt have any goals in mind at the time and was totally unsure what i can hope to achieve this year.

So where do you start? At the end of last year i baught Poker tracker 4 as a treat for final tabling the big bang, i must admit i was bit lost at first and i'm still getting used to actually using the software. So i am now able to accurately see where i am winning and losing money, and over the my first year iv not really got anywhere ( but i didnt need a piece of software to tell me that).

This is my graph for zoom, I am by no means a cash game player when i first started i didnt take it seriously i would play at the end of a MTT session if i bust from my games. But i then started to play to make VPP's so i could make silver status each month and actually put some effort into trying to beat the level and maybe step up to 5nl to make getting the points easier, and as you can see im a long way off yet. But i wont give in just yet and have been making use of pso and the videos they have available and watched a couple of the frosty videos which were very good and will be certainly watcing more from both frosty and xflixx. I am also going to make it my mission to read artys blogs the abc of 2nl as it must be a goldmine of information for anyone wanting to succeed at cash games.

My MTT graph is a bit depressing to say the least and when i first seen it i was in disbelief that i could be over 1k down when iv not made a deposit for over a year. But it is what it is and iv got it climbing in the right direction and hopefully this year i will get my first real breakthrough, Iv always been stuborn when it comes to study and honestly over most of my time playing poker iv read harrington on hold em 1 and 2 when i first started and not much more, but recently iv been making more of an effort to put study in and have been watcing videos and reading forums and iv got a mass of poker books that shall we say iv aquired that im going start working through.

My sit n go graph is beauty all up hill no real dips and holds a glimmer of hope for my future as a poker player, it didnt take me long to figure out that if you want to survive playing MTT you need to mix in SnG to fund it or run the risk of going broke and having to make more deposits which for me isnt an option. But recently since having a bankroll big enough to play MTT iv neglected the SnG and pretty much only played MTT, but this has to stop and i think is the main reason im stuck in limbo and not progressing. As we all know the variance in MTT is huge and its possible to go months even years without a win, but if i can succeed at building at SnG i will be able to apply better game selction at MTT and target smaller fields with less variance.

So this leaves me with what to do this year and what i can realistically hope to achieve, I think the way for me to have steady progress is to play mostly SnG games so my bankroll doesnt suffer from the dry spells in MTT. And so i can keep it moving upwards at a steady pace rather than up a little down a little then up and down like a yoyo, because its demoralising and depressing being stuck in limbo.

Aims and Goals for 2014:

Reach a 1k bankroll

Study more: watch at least 3 videos a week, read at least 1 chapter of a book a week, attend at least 1 live training a week.

Run a constant take a shot pot with 5% from any SnG cash's to play bigger buy in MTT max buy in $11 ( no big fields)

Only play big field MTT if i satty in (bigs and hots sunday storm etc)

Play 2nl zoom until made enough profit to step up to 5nl zoom

Get my first MTT win on poker stars

I have had a quiet january thanks the vpp boost we were gifted so i decided to take things easy and i mentioned in my last blog that i was starting to play 2-7 single draw . And iv had some success playing it iv won 2 small MTT's and had a 2nd with some other smaller cash's.

Iv also had my first win in the $2.50 180s this month after about 100 games it was welcome boost to my confidence having come close a couple of times, and i only played the 2 games that night because i didnt have time to play my regular MTT schedule.

So with having a new HUD i set about making my own hud, i really didnt like having all my stats in a big box as i thought it looked scruffy. So i made it so all my stats have there own little sections that i can arange around each players stack. The line on top has the notes vp and pfr and i downloaded the BB with harringtons M colour coding and total hands played. The bottom line has cbet, fold cbet,3bet,fold 3bet, total AF and total AFq. The box to the left has steal stats att steal, fold steal,3bet steal and fold 3bet steal. And the box to right has limp stats pre flop limp%, limp with limpers, preflop limp fold and preflop limp raise. I also colour coded all the stats so i have a visual guide to how they are playing. Im still getting used to playing with a HUD but i do find it helpful at times.

I hope you have enjoyed reading and until next time good luck at the tables!!!!
