A tourney. I’m playing very tight and everyone respects my raises, mainly because I made an all-in bet very early in the game, and now they’re quite keen to fold to a moderate raise from me. I think I’ve had one showdown the whole game, which was AK suited, and it knocked out a player with a worse kicker. I get dealt pocket Jacks. It’s a very slow table, everyone is topping each others chips up constantly and I have had lame cards almost relentlessly. So I put in a bet. It needs to be enough to scare people away, so I bet 5 times the BB. A player off on the right calls, and I think, fine – an Elephant. But the player directly to my right raises all-in. And I suddenly realise this player has not been doing much for the whole game, so he must have something pretty hot. I put him on a higher pair. I would rather see the 240 go than call and lose everything with such a good hand. I mean, it’s lovely winning with a pocket pair, but losing with one is a wrench. I fold, showing my cards. The showdown commences – the fish way over on the right has A K but the guy on my right has Q Q. I am so glad I showed my cards now. He draws another Q on the board, and the other guy only finds a King. He’s out. Winning the hand was good for the player on my right, but better for me. He gets knocked out later with his all-ins, but me, they’re thinking I must have x-ray vision. I mean I show my cards the once, they’re fantastic, I lay them down and the other guy had me by a hair. Not only that but he also tripped! That laydown felt as good as a win when I saw his cards! I just wish I could have seen all their faces when they saw what he had.
