Another Year Older

By: Horanda @ 15:38 (EST) / 211 / Comment ( 0 )

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Getting older is compulsory, growing up is not.

You have to kill pessimists, optimists will do it to themselves.

It's January, 2014, and people are adopting slogans and resolutions to carry them through the coming year. They have done this for so long that they have forgotten two things:

> Why they do it, and

> that it never works.

Part of the resolution (goal-setting) process has to be why you are doing this to yourself. And the answer has to be a reason that is acceptable to your subconscious self. This is why purely financial targets or goals so rarely work, because we know, deep down, that it is morally wrong to be greedy. Knowing that the goal is wrong, we actually work against ourselves and eventually fail, which is part of why it never works.

The other part is that we rarely look seriously at how much effort will be involved to pursue the goal. We get this great, high and mighty, plan in our heads to achieve something without thinking that it will involve as much effort and dedication as a full time job, and most of us don't have time for another full time job, we are already juggling 2 or 3 (minimum, more if you have children).

So between having a goal we don't really believe in, and not really having the time to invest in it, another set of New Year's resolutions are trashed.

This is why I don't do it much. I play poker primarily for enjoyment. Winning, of course, increases that enjoyment, so I am willing to put my time in to learning how to increase my results. Part of my plans for this month include the January challenges.

I can't make a deposit this month (I made one last month), my phone is a phone only, and I am not blowing my entire bankroll on one tournament entry, so an $11 game is out unless I can Satty in, but this still leaves quite a few options I can do to get into the daily lottery.

I can't be bothered counting up how many that will be, but I will be in the bonus roll in early Feb.

Gotta try again for the PSL this month, this is one of those things I KNOW I CAN do. And I have to find a cheap way into games where I am playing better opponents, so I can get better.

This is a prime month for it, 'cuz the January Jumpstart and the ChromeBoost promos are giving real incentive to getting the VPP up to prime level for the PSL, too.

And, the final goal for the month is to contunue to meet and interact with all of you great folk at the tables and in the training room.
