Stickin' to Your Bankroll

Of course, if you're reading this, you've probably already read over Bankroll Management, but I just wanted to take some time to re-stress the importance of good BRM. It can be highly tempting to hit up those $1/$2 games with the hopes of making some quick profit before bailing back off into the Micros, but if the cards don't fall your way, you might be left kissing your BR goodbye...

When your bankroll isn't high enough, you're giving yourself a natural disadvantage, which as we all know in poker, is the exact opposite of our intentions. A good poker player is constantly looking for ways to give himself the advantage over other players, but by playing with a sub-par bankroll, you're pretty much bringing a knife to a gun fight.

Some of this may come off as cockiness, especially seeing as I'm an amateur myself, but as an old preacher man I knew would say, "I'm not preaching down, I'm preaching around." As I find myself faced with temptations, and flaws in my game, I've found that blogging helps me to further investigate the causes and effects... which in the end helps drive the lesson home and allows my game to further improve.

No, I haven't gone and thrown away my bankroll just yet, but the temptation was sure enough there, and in just a few hands, I realized how truly important good BRM really was, and there are no exceptions to the rule. I got lucky and by the end of it I came out $0.80 ahead, but were it not for me keeping my cool and finally catching a break, the end result would have been disastrous.

So if you're contemplating moving up to real cash, keep your bankroll firmly in mind. Never play for what you can't afford to lose, and give yourself enough breathing room to play comfortably.
