To Be or Not To Be: Day 2

By: KumarLuv @ 11:17 (EDT) / 174 / Comment ( 1 )

Day 2 was sure better than Day 1, taking my BR to $35.02. But still far away from what I need to win this challenge. Nothing too interesting happened during the day – other than finding a player who was all-in for 8 out of 9 hands he played at the table. I so hoping to hit something and getting paid off – but he went bust before I had decent hole cards.

My end of the day review revealed a few chip leaks that are affecting my play bad:

Speculative hands in BB20/BB30

I player 90-player regular speed SnGs. That means I have first half an hour in which I can play speculative hands profitably. Post that, till BB250 I am going to play a very tight game throwing away most of the speculative hands.

The leak is when I continue with the speculative hand post-flop despite missing the board. Say, for example, I have pocket sixes in MP. I limp, and the flop ends up 5 handed. The flop is rainbow – 3, 5, 9. I would check the flop with intention of folding – but the hand gets checked through and turn is a Jack. 2 players check it to me – and, more often than not, I end up making a close to pot size bet. There are times I end up winning the pot right then, but when I don’t the lower stack becomes a huge liability soon enough.

Even otherwise, turn bet sizing has been an issue I have been working to sort out. These go together, I guess.

Calling 3-bet just because I open-raised

Fixing this leak is easy. I am going to be more disciplined and fold to 3-bet with hnds like AJ, AQ etc. Here is an example:

Jacks with short stack

My reaction to Jacks and KJs is: proceed with caution; these are not good starting hands. This becomes troublesome when I have fewer than 15 BBs. I ended min raising or flating – then trying to decide what to do on flop – folding if an overcard comes, pushing all in if I have an over pair, checking if I hit a set. Results are horrible, all put together. I need to shove pre, I know, but still make a mistake over the board. Maybe putting it down here helps

Heres for a good day at the tables. Cheers!
