Playing With Live Cards

One thing I noticed immediately on Pokerstars.tv is the Sunday Million Show. I always enjoy final table action because it is always full of bad beats, great plays, and to teach you the ins and outs of the end game. What did catch my attention though was an explanation of a host on a key play from a player on Hand 33 of the November 21st recording. In this hand, you found a smaller suited connector and the play simply was to go all-in as the low stack and try to get lucky or to take the blinds. Now many of you would find this to be a bad play in your freeroll as you see everyone going all-in but really I don't find it a problem with it at all. Many people immediately scream out every expletive adding donkey somewhere in there but I have to agree seeing this play and explanation in the Sunday Million to really put it in perspective.

Poker is about making the best hand from the cards provided and although strong pocket pairs likes aces and kings will more than likely take down pots automatically, it's not necessarily a sure thing guaranteed. I don't know how many times I've seen it break down as two pair gets hits from the weaker hand or a straight. This is truly where the strategy of playing with live cards will come into account.

Playing with live cards is having the opportunity to make hands and find an opportunity where your odds to win that were slim now are going through the roof based off a good flop, turn, or river. Many times you will find that people will only raise on Ace variants or King variants but why settle for these hands if everyone is looking for them too? Playing connectors or even Jack,Queen, or king high card low kicker might seem dangerous but sometimes playing with these hands will make you even more dangerous as a player since many of these hands can be well disguised betting or checking. Many times you will find yourself hitting the top pair on a small board or even flopping two pairs and setting up your opponents in bad position. You can even find more opportunities to knock out other players with cards that you know may hit for you this way.

Now many people will struggle to find a medium between what they are told what to play and what they feel that should play. Most sites including this one recommend playing aggressive but tight and many just take the later of the two and keep it until they draw Aces and Kings. Although that may win you hands and secure chips, your opponents who are taking chances receive more opportunities to overcome your play. Even more, since most players will take the advice and play that way, those people who find more flexibility with their hands will pry on their blinds and build up their stack. Pick your sports carefully. Make sure to choose opponents who you feel are only looking for the monster hands and play very vituperative (thanks Steve Young) and you may find yourself getting folded to.

So look for live cards in your next few games especially when you find yourself as the short chip stack and you may find yourself with outs you never would have with those bigger cards. Just remember that you are only as good as the cards that are dealt and as much of a great player can change those odds, you cannot overcome the sporadic notion of the game to deliver action every hand. And although I would like 100% guaranteed Aces or King wins, gambling is gambling and it wouldn't be poker without the luck of the draw.
