TIGHT AGGRESSIVE: Great Theory

By: Mbao88 @ 06:40 (EDT) / 192 / Comment ( 2 )

Hi Guys,

When looking for advice on best strategies to adopt in how you play poker most people recommend taking a tight aggressive aproach. Its a good theory and it makes sense that that if you play premiums you are more likely to pick up the pots if it goes to showdown.

When put into practice how affective is it really in regards to tournament poker. During my past year of playing poker I have found that my results have been poorer now than when I started out. When my understanding of the game was fairly limited and I played about 35% of hands I made ITM more times than now when I am more selective of the cards I play and where I play them from.

I think the problem with the tight aggresive style is that if you have poor cards in the middle phase of a tournament you quickly find yourself shortsacked. Then by the time you get a premium hand too many people have good equity to call with marginal hands. On pokerstars I have found the big stack is more likely to win than a shortstack regardless of what cards they have. All the time you see a player with 10-12 bb shove KK only for another with 35+ bb call with J9 and flop a straight or a flush. That ends the tournament of the tight player. A lot of players chalk this down to variance, but truth is it happens more often than not.

I think in a mtt it is better to try see as many cheap flops as possible, even with very marginal hands then play aggressive when you hit and it makes for an easy fold if you do not hit. This strategy can lead to more early exits but also increases percentage of ITM finishes when you build up a decent stack quickly. Reduce that high percentage of middle phase finishes which consume time with no reward at the end of it all.

Have a good time at the tables ladies and gents
