Bankroll management is an important concept in Poker but for a poker noob I think far too much is stressed on it's importance. Time and time again I read posts about bankroll but no amount of bankroll management will help you if you play losing poker. It will of course help you lose it a lot slower but it's much more important to enjoy yourself and think of poker as entertainment.

A much more important point is NEVER RISK ANYTHING YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE. Poker is not roulette (although some people play it that way.) Poker is a long term game of making correct decisions. If you enjoy a gamble, there's nothing wrong with sticking a few £/$'s in and trying to spin it up. A hero of mine is Maratik. He spun 40FPPs into $1 Million dollars. Anyone can get lucky but Maratik had something else - Skill.

If you are a poker noob then be sensible with your deposits but don't think it's the end of the World if you lose it all. So long as you think of poker as entertainment and enjoy the game then there's nothing wrong with that. I know several players that frequently deposit £20 each week and play games like the Sunday Storm. Some weeks they cash for a few $$$ which makes it all worth it but it's much more important to WORK ON YOUR GAME than worry about bankroll management.

WE MAKE MONEY AT POKER NOT BY OUR OWN BRILLIANCE BUT BY MAKING LESS MISTAKES THAN OUR OPPONENTS. This is the key to playing poker. Sure we can have days where we lose and other days when we win but by making less mistakes we will win over the long term. There is no magic want to achieve this but we can take steps towards this by working on our game. If you're reading this you're most likely a member of the PSO (If you're not then why not?) so you've taken the first steps towards this goal.

This is also a never ending goal. You may be the best player on the planet but if you stay static then your opponents will catch up and overtake you. Training is a never ending process so keep watching/ learning/ participating and asking questions. Plug those leaks and fix your game. Keep improving your game and use it against players who know less than you.

This brings me on to Bankroll Management again. This is where it works in your favour. As poker is such a long term goal you need a bankroll to take the swings. There will be days/ weeks/ months where things don't go your way. So long as you're making the right decisions these days don't matter. If we sensibly bankroll then we can take these hits and still have funds to keep playing.

I've seen threads on bankroll that recommend 100 Buy Ins for each level but this shouldn't be set in stone. Use a bankroll strategy that works for you. I'm much more aggressive with my bankroll when I've low funds but far stricter at higher stakes. I've seen me playing with a 5 buy in bankroll while higher up I've used a 200 buy in.

Work on your game first and foremost and worry about bankroll management when you can play winning poker.

Finally here is a sick brag about what you can achieve with good bankroll management. My username is PP375192 (There's a reason for that name but that's another story) and that graph can be found on Sharkscope. It's sure to change as it's exponential and 27% ROI.

OK I've ran super hot and this is on another site where they gave me a free $5 (similar to the free $8 you can get here at PSO.)

I began playing 12c SnGs then took shots at 55c with only 14 buy ins for this level. I kept taking shots at higher but but always moved down when I lost. I've turned that $5 into $100 in 3 months and now plan to turn it into $1,000. Andre Coimbra turned $100 into $70k by good bankroll management. if I could achieve a small part of that I'd be a happy man!

Good luck at the tables.

Mark
