You CANNOT win money at poker

Am I losing my mind?

Not really, this was a conversation I had with my brother during the week but before I tell you this story, lets go back 2 years.

We had the same converstaion 2 years ago and he told me his son was a GREAT poker player. His son had several live game wins that mounted up to quite a few hundred GBP.

Now lets come back to the present. We had the same conversation and I told him I'd a decent year. Straight away he said his son told him that nobody wins and it's all luck. This is from a GREAT poker player who obviously knows his stuff so why should he doubt him. He then gave me some of the Dale Roxxu questions. Things like "you never lose?". Trying to explain bankroll management to him is like finding life on Mars.

The sad thing is he's a high stakes gambler who tells you about his wins so there's some parallels. Deep down he knows he loses overall but keeps no records of how much he spends. There's nothing wrong with having a punt, the thrill of the ocasional win makes sure the high street bookies will never go bust but a serious gambler has to keep records  Even a simple spreadsheet of profit and loss for the day will suffice.

Now to his son. I'm sure many of you who read this will know similar stories. A couple of decent wins and a player is hooked for life even though they've a graph like a lemming off a cliff. A couple of wins makes you a GREAT poker player. He's probably had these wins getting lucky and then thought the game was easy, deposited more than his initial wins and then spewed it all off playing luck or bust poker.

But I know a secret most of these punters don't know. Poker is a short term game of luck but a long term game of skill. It's so deceptively simple to learn and any 2 cards can win. Anyone can get lucky but to win consistenly in the game then you have to work hard, keep records and above all be honest with yourself.

I meet him on Christmas day again and I'm just debating how to approach him on the subject of keeping records, bankroll management and the skill of poker.

Nobody wins at poker, do they?
