My Best Moment on Pokerstars - WBCOOP

By: Paul7036 @ 21:49 (EST) / 565 / Comment ( 4 )

Hi everyone & welcome to my entry for the 2013 WBCOOP (World Blogging Championship of Online Poker). To enter this fantastic free event I need to answer the question: “What has been your best moment playing on Pokerstars?”

I’ve been a Pokerstars member now for what must be getting on for a decade so you’d think I’d have lots of fantastic stories of impressive wins to share with you all... Unfortunately not… For the first 9 years of my poker ‘career’ I was what we call in the poker world, a fish - a player who everyone loves to sit down with & labels Green (for easy money) after watching me for about 10 hands.

Despite my fishy qualities I did have some success back in 2007 when I qualified for the Sunday Million 3 times, cashing once for over $800. I also final tabled an $11 tournament with over 2000 runners, picking up almost $1000 for my 5th place finish. But really, they were ‘nearly’ moments… If I could have just made it a little further I’d have really have a story to tell.

There was another ‘nearly’ moment back then that I’ll never forget. Pokerstars were running another of their great promotions, giving away WSOP main event packages through a series of freerolls. I’d battled my way through the first stage to earn a ticket to one of the finals. There were around 1250 runners with only one prize – a single WSOP main event package worth $14,000 – a trip to Las Vegas, flights & hotel paid for & a once in a lifetime chance to enter the biggest tournament in the poker calendar. 7 hours later & I’d somehow managed to find myself in the final 3. I had A7 in the Big Blind & the button raised. I’d seen him do this several times already so I re-raised  & he called. The flop came A,7,3 – just about the best flop I could hope for. I checked, the opponent made a big bet & I shoved. He called & showed A3. He had me covered but only just & winning the pot would have given me a big lead over the other opponent too. The turn was a blank… thoughts of Las Vegas were spinning through my head… and the river… a 3 of course & my dream was over.

I fished the laptop out of the wheelie bin the next morning but after that I really started to lose interest in poker & played very little from 2008-2011.

In 2012 I started to get back into it a little more & something fantastic happened last May that would completely change the way I play poker. I discovered PokerSchoolOnline! Here was a free resource that offered poker training from a number of successful players, including amazing videos from professionals such as Chris Moneymaker & Grayson ‘SpaceGravy’ Physioc. This really was my best moment on Pokerstars! Now I could learn from the most successful players, see how they play & listen to their thoughts. I could suddenly see all the things that were wrong with my game & I had the tools to put it right. For the last few months I’ve been consistently making money playing poker using all the things I’ve learnt at the school. There’s also so much more that I’ve not yet seen so hopefully I can continue leaning & become an even better player in time.

This year I’ve set myself the challenge of turning a $250 bankroll into $2500 & you can follow my progress on my BLOG
