Plastic Pearl

The poker musings of a micro stakes newbie.

Thought I would share a situation from a hand I played this evening in the Sunday Storm. It is with regards to a rule that I don't think many poker players know exists - and in fact until recently neither did I, it's something JWK24 called me out on in a PSO homegame last month. Read the hand history and spot the problem:

PokerStars Hand #126449167701: Tournament #1051405184, $10+$1 USD Hold'em No Limit - Level I (10/20) - 2014/12/07 18:39:04 WET [2014/12/07 13:39:04 ET]

It's a three way pot and I've opened. I am called by Adiniho, and nherrego puts in a 3bet. I then 4-bet, at which point Adiniho folds. Crucially, in the chat he says 'KJ heart'.  To my disbelief, nherrego then folds, showing a single K. I don't think he had KK: he would probably have still shipped it. KQ is an unlikely hand to 3-bet in this spot, and and I am blocking KQ anyway. So he probably has AK, and he has folded knowing that one of his outs has gone. This, on average, will have cost me chips as I would have been a favourite in the hand.

This violates the Card Room Rules:

22:You may not make any chat comments which may affect the play of any hand or tournament, even if you are an observer. There are two exceptions to this rule:

a)In cash game hands which are heads up (everyone else has folded, or the hand started with two players) the two players involved may chat about the hand as they wish.

b)In tournaments which are heads up (everyone else has been knocked out of the tournament, or the tournament started with two players), the two players involved may chat about the hand as they wish.

As this pot was not heads up, it is against the rules. Now I am not necessarily blaming Andiniho for this: the Storm is a tournament full of casual players, and how many players will have read the rules? Even I wasn't aware of this until recently! But I hope this blog post might go towards making some more people aware.

Incidentally, the next step of the Card Room rules says:

23. Report any problem chat immediately; please call a Chat Moderator by clicking the ‘Call Moderator’ button in the Dealer Chip Tray or ‘Options’ button at the top of the table.

Which I did. To my amusement the moderator came along, said hello, and then said there was nothing for them to do. The very least I would have expected was them to remind players of the rules: so that was very disappointing from Pokerstars, given that I explained the issue when I reported it. I have e-mailed PS Support so we'll see if they agree with me!
