So, you think you're a poker player?

As I move through the lessons, join Al in his classes and play on-line, I realize that there is so much that I don't know and so much to learn. In fact, I firmly believe that learning to be your best in poker can be a never ending process. Also, while my 5 year plan to becoming the best poker player I can be is well on it's way, but what happens when you think you are there, and you think you are ready to play the big tournaments, maybe even for a living? Tada, I recently watched a poker documentary called "No Limit, A Search for the American Dream on the Poker Tournament Trail" and it was quite an eye opener. Without getting too much into detail, you follow a woman (the poker player) and her husband (producer) on the poker tournament trail where she is going to play in 6 major tournaments including the world series. You get to see the highs and lows of being on the tournament trail and also see some nifty interviews with some of pokers elite. While this documentary focuses on the games our heroine is good at (Omaha and Stud), you can take a close look at what she's going through, how she reacts to her play and you may be surprised to see a little bit of yourself in her reactions and play. One major thing I learned from watching the documentary is we need to control our emotions while playing, or we will bring ourselves down in a major way. We also need to have the discipline to create a plan and stick with it. And finally, we all need to be aware of our true skill level (don't pull any punches) or we may talk ourselves into playing in a ring game at a level where we shouldn't, or we may try to sit down and win back our losses when we are in a negative frame of mind. So, you think you're a poker player? I think we all are, but what makes the good players good, and the great players great is having the patience, discipline, training, and ability to adapt over time. And believe it or not, that's only a small part of it. For now... ante up Ric
