Right Fielder Number Six

What Is A RF

By: RF #6 @ 17:55 (EST) / 53 / Comment ( 0 )
A Right Fielder, abbreviated RF, is the outfielder in baseball who plays defense in right field. Right field is the area of the outfield to the right of a person standing at home plate and facing towards the pitcher's mound. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the right fielder is assigned the number 9.

Outfielders must cover large distances, so speed, instincts and quickness to react to the baseball are key. They must be able to catch fly balls above there head and on the run, as well prevent balls hit down the right field foul line from getting past them. Playing roughly 250-300 feet from home plate, they must be able to throw the baseball accurately over a long distance in able to be effective. Of all the outfield posittions, the right fielder often has the strongest arm, because they are the farthest from third base.

Right fielders tend to often be a stronger offensive player then defensive one. Being that there right handed batters, which are more common than left handed ones, they tend to pull the ball to left field.

The right fielder's other jobs include backing up the fist baseman on all throws from the catcher and pitcher, when possible, and all bunted balls, since the catcher or the fist baseman must be available for fielding the ball. The right fielder backs up secound base on any ball thrown from the left side of the field. The right fielder backs up or covers first base when the first baseman is in a run down between 3rd base and home plate.

Right field has developed a reputation in little league as being a position where you can hide less talented players with out damaging a team's defense in any way.  That is mainly because unlike at the major league level,  where players have the ability to drive the baseball into the outfield in all directons, most little league batters are unable to  hit the baseball out of the infield with any regularity. Another reason for that is because most batters are right handed, the left fielder and center fielder( to some extent) will have far more opportunities to make plays.
