An Expensive Lesson

Sometimes our biggest mistake is just sitting down at the table…

I was playing a regular 50NL table this morning and had a rather interesting situation. Villain 3 had been the weakest player at the table until Villain 1 joined the game. Villain 1 sat down with $32.25. He was playing only this table. Moreover, he was displaying a phone icon and a single Bronze VIP Star. His inexperience became immediately apparent as he defended his big blind in his first hand by calling preflop and two more streets with J2o and air. After that first hand, the regs at the table started hunting him. He obliged by calling preflop all but one hand through his first orbit. His 50NL experience only lasted eight hands.

This guy was weak and probably had his entire bankroll on the table. I have made this mistake myself and it usually ends in disaster. I knew Villain 1 was in danger. I even felt happy for the guy when his second best pair held and he doubled up through one of the regs. He should have left the table with his profit after his first orbit, but he didn’t. Then this happened…

Lucky river for me. Villain 1 was holding 77 for a flopped set turned house but lost to my better house. That hurts, but it happens. (It happened to me last night against A_FISTFULL - nice hand!). Villain 1 left the table immediately. I almost felt bad for the guy until he started calling me and Pokerstars every insult he could think of. In an almost friendly tone I replied “Welcome to 50NL Bronze Star!”

This player made many mistakes during his eight hands at the table. His biggest mistake though was sitting down in the first place at a table presumably outside his bankroll and definitely outside his skill level. Don’t make this mistake yourself. I wonder if Villain 1 will ever understand how his own bad decisions created this tragedy or if he will continue to blame it on me and Pokerstars...
