I'll inner peace you in a minute...

It's all about balance, mental balance that is. Knowing when you're on tilt is the key to so much in this game. Knowing when you're in the zone even more so. You can get battered mentally and incessantly over huge spells of poker, take Sunday for example:

I started off in good spirits with the intention of having a tournament day and played calm, cool, calculated poker for about an hour. I'm slowly' gathering chips on all my tables (4) and then suddenly i look down at KK and AKs with a squeeze opportunity on the AK and a nice UTG trap attempt the KK. 30 seconds later and the KK loses to A7o, the AK to 44... boom boom out out... inner calm Roy, it's ok....

It's not ok though and i can feel it... just that slight shift and the equilibrium has gone. Where A9 1 off the button was a fold it has now become an attacking option, where a flush draw was outpriced i'm now willing to shove and see and trying to see the flop with a pocket has suddenly become an allin re-raise trying to get a coin toss vs an AK/AQ......

This is the point where you have to learn to walk away, to rest, to recharge and get rid of that knawing sense of cruel unjustified discrimination. I didn't walk away all day, it cost me about $100 just to stubornly work through my day chasing retribution that was never going to come.

Yesterday i was sat in 4th position with 35 players left in a $3.50 rebuy 180 man tourny with a 40k stack and the UTG player pushed allin for his 23k. Holding KK i re-raised allin and he hit his set (TTT)... i hung on but bubbled and I knew it had cut me, it hurts to get big hands turned over at crucial times but it needn't cost you a day of losing. I Didn't play another game yesterday...

This morning i duly tested the waters, pain gone and head clear i got a 2nd place in the same tourny and played some great stuff. The difference in play with inner peace, with a calm and rested mind is, i think, immense.

So the next time you get a bad beat or suffer a run of getting screwed over, stop. Stop and think if you would be playing the same hand the same way were it not for your aces getting bust 5 minutes ago... if not, go have a smoke or drink or just chill out and come back later!

I'm Roy and today was a calm, cool and profitable day...
