Winning your way to the $1,100 ticket for the Montreal Poker Festival

This is mainly for the people who would like to take part in the Montreal Poker Festival tournament in Montreal, Quebec, Canada between the 27th of September and the 3rd of October.

There's 2 places you can play to win a seat to this event. One is right here at PokerStars for a seat only ($1,100) and the other is at Full Tilt for a package ($1,500) or a seat only ($1,100). Lets take a look at how we can win one of them.

Full Tilt

Seat Only - This can only be won through Freeroll satellites. It all starts with 2 daily Freerolls every night were only the top 50 will get a ticket to the following Freeroll. Then every week on Sunday, the winner of this Freerolls gets awarded the Main Event seat. It's FREE, therefore why not? but, theses are the worst odds you can find. A minimum of 4,000 people play it and only the top 50, therefore giving you 1:80 chance of winning. Then on Sunday, you'll have about 700 players fighting for this one ticket which gives you 1:700 odds. But it's free and will take you about 3 hours for the first Freeroll and another 5 hours for the second.

Package - Lets look at all the possible ways to win.

Monster Rebuy for $5.50 - Average number of players is about 120, average rebuys is about 4 and 1 add-on. Your odds are about 1:120 to win a ticket and 1:25 to cash. There's 4 satellites to this satellite and they cost $0.11 (rebuy), $0.33 (rebuy), $0.55 (hyper) and $1.10 (hyper)

The $55 satellite - If you like Hyper satellites with 300 starting chips, you'll like this. About 30 players, therefore the odds are 1:30. A few satellites will get you here and they are $0.55 (rebuy), $2.20, $3.30 (rebuy), $5.50 (hyper), $8.70 (hyper) and $11.00

The $100 satellite - The average number of players is about 50 and the odds are 1:17 for a ticket and 1:9 to cash. A few satellites will get you here and they are $1.10 (rebuy), $5.50 (rebuy), $11.00 (hyper), $17.00 (hyper), $22.00 and $26.00 (hyper)

In conclusion, since I don't like hypers and I don't like rebuys with huge odds, my personal choice stops at the $22 satellite (odds of 1:5) to the $100 satellite for the Main Event ticket with odds of 1:15 (which is still high).

*** At Full Tilt, most satellites (if not all), you can re-register once you are out another 2 times. ***

PokerStars

PokerStars has seats only for $1,100. There are no freerolls here, only $$$ or Fpp's. Lets look at all the possible ways to win. There's 9 satellites available, $5.50, $5.50 (rebuy), $11.00, $11.00 (rebuy), $33.00 (1R1A), $50.00 (hyper, 20k chips), $55.00, $100.00 and $215.

$5.50 - About 400 players participate with one ticket available, giving 1:400 odds of winning a ticket and 1:60 to cash.

$5.50 (rebuy) - The odds here should be around 1:50 for a ticket and 1:17 to cash

$11.00 - About 200 players participate with one ticket available, giving 1:200 odds of winning a ticket and 1:40 to cash.

$11.00 (rebuy) - The odds here should be around 1:40 (this satellite hasn't been played yet, will update later)

$33.00 (1R1A) - Most people that play this, will take the rebuy and add-on for a total cost of $93. The odds should be around 1:15. (this satellite hasn't been played yet, will update later)

$50.00 (hyper, 20k chips) - Starting stack is 20,000 chips with levels of 3 minutes. 70 players which gave odds of 1:23 to win a ticket and 1:17 to cash

$55.00 - Regular 3,000 chips and 10 minute levels. The odds here are 1:22

$100.00 - This satellite is also a hyper 20,000 chips with levels of 3 minutes. Odds are 1:15 for a ticket and 1:6 to cash.

$215.00 - Is a regular 5,000 chip 10 minute level. The odds here are 1:5

To reach those satellites, there's plenty of sub-satellites available to all of your likings, such as Hypers, Rebuys, Fpp's, 3x turbos. They start at $1.10 for the 3x turbo to $25.50 hyper to the $100.00.

In conclusion, since I don't like hypers and I don't like rebuys with huge odds, my personal choice stops at the $15.00 satellite (odds of 1:7) to the $100 satellite for the Main Event ticket with odds of 1:11 (which is better than the Full Tilt $100). Second would be the $50 hyper 20K stack because of it's structure.

Remember to look at the odds when selecting a satellite. It's not because it is cheap that you'll make it to the next satellite. All the fishies and donkeys will be playing it, so you'll need more luck as your AA could easily be knock out by 27o....lol. Look at it backwards, what satellite gives you the best odds to the Main Event ticket, than what satellite gives you the best odds to that satellite. Just don't throw yourself in any satellites because it's cheap.

Good Luck all and I hope this helps

PS. This applies to any satellites
