Chapter 5: Decision

Chapter 5: Decision.
God has given us the power to make decisions. There is no other power that allows you to guide your own life. Being capable of making decision and following through on them determines your path in life.

It’s mandatory in poker to be capable of making a decision. Well if you don’t make decisions in hands, you will be folding your hand. One could say the only question that then remains is: ‘What is the correct decision?’ I won’t go further on that question as that involves theoretical and mathematical aspects in poker. However I’m going to suggest some patterns of making decision, which can help you making better and faster decisions towards the future.

Procrastination is the direct opposite of decision. You could say: poker is good to force you to make a prompt decision. The trick however is to apply it on everything else as well.

Successful people, great leaders, the best poker players all have or had the quality to make decisions promptly and if it was required to change them or adapt them, they did. You can’t always make right decisions, but make decisions right.

I’m going to give you three questions you can ask you at any time of the day or in any hand at the poker table. These three questions might help you understand the power of a decision or moment better and hopefully improve your decision or action towards the future.

1) What am I focusing on?

Are you focusing on the hand at the moment or are you distracted? You noticed someone betting something strange. This can be anything you notice or do.

2) What does this mean?

Try to figure out why you did that move? Sometimes you do things you can’t really explain or think back on a move which was foolish. Or maybe you can’t figure out what his betsizing or pattern means. Try to find that out. Use the PSO community if necessary. The more meanings you can give to something the better you’ll be equipped for the future.

3) What am I going to do?

Know when that example reoccurs what to do or how to react. Then you can equip yourself with a new decision and most of the time a better. But be ready to change that decision again if needed.

Challenge 9: Apply these three questions a few times during one day (Make sure to have at least one poker session). If it helped you, do it again at least one day each month. Try toying and puzzling with them and it could open some doors or insights for you.

Making decision is like a habit. The more you make them, the easier they get and the more you enjoy your life instead that of someone else.
