Poker School Open Tournaments: My thoughts.

By: TedtBug @ 12:49 (EDT) / 302 / Comment ( 0 )

Good evening All, I am a firm beliver in trying to improve your poker game all the times, so started playing these ranking tournaments about 3 weeks ago and thought i'd share my experience.

Firstly let me make this clear, different approches and starts work for different people if you can use somthing I say to your benifit, then great, if you don't thats fine too! this post is specificly about the poker open skill MTT tournaments. chuck out any rulebook on playing poker in csh games, STT MTT these are a totally different beast and should be treated as such.

Step 1 Realising your goals!

Since this is done on a ranking systm where you are assigned points + or - based on where you finish, your first goal without exception should be not to finish in the bottom 75%, the rate at which the tournament drops players is phenomanal, you'll lose 500 players in the first minute, does it really hurt you to fold that A10 after a single raise with 5 people left to act?, the amount of people that just shovve all in 1500 chips to win 30 is unreal ,they do it to double/triple up or get knocked out, which is fine since its a freerole but over mulitple games where finishing position matters the most the fact you lose points for lower finishes outweighs the gain from shoving 2nd hand in, of coure you get aces kings and u want to shove, fingers crossed you only get 1 or 2 callers, not 5 or 6, limp in and go set mining or flushing with your rag ace but dont do anthing crazy as the players drop so fast you want to hold onto them chips for as long as you can before mid game sets in. if u do manage to grab the chips early on, the same rule should apply!

Step 2 Hand Selections/Postion

The one good thing, especially if you are new to poker is the value of hand selction that can be seen from these games, one of the most important decisions you can make as a player is before you put more chips into the pot. the amount of people that are for example preparred to commit all 1500 chips on the flop just because an ace hit with say A4 off suit only to get called by AQ and 2 others then moan that they were unlucky. Get used to folding, this isnt telly poker you dont need to play every hand! the other huge benifit of these games is learning postion, assuming your table is the reckless ones i see all the time there, why call a raise with KJ when your out of position only to get reriased followed by a hail mary all in, you know your folding (well i hope you do) so why play it in the first place, save the chips move up in position!

Just these 2 stpes alone if you treat the game right and realise your goals will soar you under the 2000 mark which earns you money from pokerstars along with giving you better information olong the way, and thats the goal right, you not here to lose money!!

I dont want to bore you guys too much so i'll continue with it it you think it helps so leave feedback peeps there are lots of little subtle things to be learned from these games, its free use it!!

All the Best

John
