The poker adventures of TommyGun

Hey everyone,

I am finally here with my summary of the last 2 months. I decided to merge it into one blog post due to lack of time and the fact that July was very uneventful (apart from the fact that I finally managed to move up to 25NL ).

I started off slowly getting used to a new player pool and without taking too many hits below the belt I ended up with a small $130 profit in July. I tried to stick to my general game plan, played almost 60k hands and was feeling pretty good about my progress thus far at 25NL. However, things were about ot change for me pretty dramatically in the following weeks in August. After having a proper look at some of the general tendencies in the 25NL player pool I decided to make some important changes to my game:

1) Add more value overbets on rivers which bricked all draws present on the flop, also value overbet when I hit a backdoor draw (even the best of 25NL regulars seem to be oblivious to the fact that a backdoor flush or straight completed so from my experience they will call you just as light as if the turn did not bring any more draws)

2) Cut down turn and river bluffing frequencies
3) Pot control flops a lot more
4) Take more passive lines OOP against aggro opponents

To my big surprise it seemed to have worked flawlessly and in almost no time I was up about $600. I played well, ran well and the new tweaks to my game seemed to have worked perfectly. I was able to extract so much value out of people bluffcatching me or trying to bluff me when I showed weakness that I could not believe it took me so long to realize where the real value was. Of course things in poker can't go this well forever... My biggest poker leak got me once again and in just 1 terrible weekend all my profits were lost (and some more). Then I managed to get
some of it back during the week only to lose it again on the next weekend... What is the definition of stupidity? Doing the same things over and over again and expect different results? That's exactly what I have been doing at poker tables for far too long. I know that on 6max zoom I can't play well against all the aggro casual players and I still go and put in incredible amounts of volume (at least for me) during weekends because "I do not have enough time to play during work days". What a load of horse crap that is. I guess some people never learn from their mistakes... And costly mistakes they are!

It is also incredibly frustrating to lose the most against players from who I am supposed to win the most. My inability to adapt to their seemingly random betting patterns is just pathetic. I should have sat down to do a proper database analysis a long time ago to find what works and what does not during weekends and not just take random guesses and look at the sky to see what the current constellation of stars is (which is exactly how my game plan looked at times). Too often I drift too far from my working calculated approach to the game to the one that is
based mostly on feel. It just does not work for me and I need to get rid of it as soon as possible.

To cut this post short here is where I am right now and what my plans for the future are:

I quit playing at the point my BR reached the original limit which I set myself to move up to 25NL. This means that I can still play there and have a big enough cushion to fall back on if I hit another downswing. That's the good news.

The bad news is that I really do not feel like playing anytime soon. I need to do a proper DB analysis of all my hands played at 25NL and until I do that I am not gonna set foot on 25NL tables (or most likely tables of any stakes for that matter). I like the changes I have made so far I still need to rework my general game plan to make sureI won't blow out so badly in the future. All those weekend downswings really start to piss me off big time.

Hope you are all doing better than me Happy grinding everyone!

Tommy
