A Rant About Showing Cards

By: TweedleBeetl @ 18:41 (EST) / 448 / Comment ( 5 )

Recently I have been noticing players showing 1 or both cards more that usual and it got me pondering.

I have always been told that it is -EV to show cards or that one should at least do it very sparingly, as after all Poker is a game of incomplete information, and the more one can put the opponent in the dark, the better.

So when I see someone show cards I tend to assume he is a weak player, specially when the cards shown are unremarkable. Often I am at a loss to understand their motivation.

A common pattern is villain opens, I call, flop misses villain range so I raise his CB. Then after tanking villain folds showing one ace. Why is he doing this? Does he consider it an affront to have to fold an ace? Is he trying to convince me that he is not a calling station? (Look I have and ace, and I still fold!)

Then there is the case where it is folded to the small blind and he feels obligated to show some trash hand when he folds as if he has to explain such timidity.

Sometimes I imagine they are doing this on purpose just to confuse me! Does anyone do that?

I can understand that it could make sense for someone that bluffs a lot to show his hand when he has it to make the impression that he does not bluff, so when someone does show after getting people to fold, I must assume that this villain usually would be bluffing in this spot.

Should I start showing random cards to confuse the opposition? Specially if it makes regs think that I am more fishy than I am.
