6 rules of success

By: WeenieSVK @ 08:40 (EDT) / 50 / Comment ( 1 )

Do you like motivational videos? I love them! probably because I am super lazy person and I often need something or somebody to push me. And those videos are doing great job!

My favorite so far is that one, where you can hear Arnold Schwarzenegger's amazing speech and his "6 rules of success". When I watched it few weeks after I started to play poker, I was amazed how precisely it fits this game.

1. Trust yourself
2. Break the rules
3. Don't be affraid to fail
4. Don't listen to the naysayers
5. Work your butt off
6. Give something back

2. Break the rules - Bluff your opponents! But do that carefully. Make those bluffs against good players who can "understand", that you represent that flush or straight, so his two pairs ain't good anymore. Change your game. If you are TAG player, it doesn't mean, that you have to always play only the best hands and you can't be "creative" from time to time. If you play your hands always same way, you are the easiest opponent for other players.

3. Don't be affraid to fail - This one is my favorite. Probably cause it defines me the best. I have to admit I had problems with this, even when I am only recreational player. "You can't always win but don't be affraid of making decisions". Anyone who played more than 100 hands knows, how perfectly this fits the poker and its variance. It's always sweat right?! Unless I have nuts on river and my opponent pushes all-in, I always make decisions with that weird feeling (little bit of wondering, fear, excitement...) and question in my mind: "What does he have?" Then moment of showdown. And moment of relieve. But when your opponent got lucky and you did everything right, don't let those situations to get you down. To doubt yourself. It just happens sometimes. Just say to yourself: "Luck never gives, it only lends."

1. 4. and 5. - It doesn't apply to us, recreational players that well, how this applies to those who are professionals or would like to be. It's just like with anything else. If you want to be good and successful in anything, you have to work hard for it. You have to trust yourself. And you can't let those who failed, to bring you down with them.

6. Give something back - Rake. Period.
