Poker luck & life luck seem to be linked

By: bizcop @ 18:02 (EDT) / 299 / Comment ( 2 )

Having joined the Poker School Open League I got off to a good start with a 36th place finish out of as many will already know who play on Pokerstars, 10,000.

A positive start and I knew I was focused when I was playing. But it is easy to spoil the hard work by not being focused and choosing to enter such big tournaments. And when you have had as much bad luck as I have been having in my normal life, the luck seems to also go when I am playing poker.

Some argue we make our own luck, and to a big degree I subscribe to that. I can safely say that a drop in my luck in poker is self inflicted, but in life most of the luck that has turned against me has been beyond my control. But back to poker, it is with that in mind that I have not had the confidence I might normally have had. Not only that, rather than using the opportunities presented to me by bad poker players - whether that be an extended sit out until all the idiots disappear, I have found that my judgement has been somewhat off the boil when it comes to playing hands.

Do I stay in and fold a pair of aces because some idiot wants to go all in on the first hand, or should I say a whole bunch of idiots, or do I play and curse my luck which I already know is out when the person who had the worse cards yet went all in, comes up smelling of roses?

The problem with luck is that it is easy to start taking it personally. Because luck is personal. So when it is out, getting back out of the hole is not that easy. It requires a complete reformat. But when there is little else to do due to circumstances beyond my control, it is easy to start a big tournament when I really should leave it alone.

Anyway the law of averages says things should turn in my favour soon, I have had three month solid of things going from bad to worse. But luck, like form is not a permanent state.
