The Disciplined Degenerate

A spot where I try to make sense of a game that rarely makes any sense
Send PM

Before I begin, just a shout out to all my fellow Canadians reading this by saying Happy Canada Day! Just waiting for the night sky to come in so I can watch the annual fireworks show. Always such a treat to end the day.

Managed to grind out my Silverstar for the month of June, so I'm happy about that. Not sure how much I'll be playing this month thanks to my first ever trip to Europe in less than a week. Going to visit London and Dublin for 10 days, so I'm looking forward to seeing all that those great cities have to offer. I tried to convince the girlfriend to go to the Isle of Man to visit Pokerstars HQ, but she would have none of it... (just kidding!)

I'll be coming back to Canada mid-July with the plan to go to the Pokerstars VIP Bash in Toronto. It's not finalized yet, but if I make it, I'll make sure to have tons of pictures from that event that I can share with you guys.

Wanted to give a shout-out to Alexandra who added me into her post about favourite hands in the forums.

I would say that my favourite hand is any suited one-gap connector due to the flush and straight possibilities. Now I'm sure people are asking, "Why one-gap and not just suited connectors?"

The reason is simple: With one-gap connectors like a 10-Qs or 6-8s, you have much more hidden straight possibilities in the form of double-gutter scenarios. And I've always found that you're much more likely to get paid off in a double-gutter scenario instead of a texture where the straight is obvious.

Example: I hold 10-Qs and the flop comes down 6-8-9.

Now I have 8 outs to make the straight with either a 7 or a J. I would much rather have the J come down on the turn or river to complete my straight than the 7 because the J would make it still less likely for a player to have the straight. The 7 makes it an obvious straight for anyone holding a 5 or 10.

The extra bit of deception with the double-gutter can make all the difference.

Good luck at the tables!
