The Disciplined Degenerate

A spot where I try to make sense of a game that rarely makes any sense
Send PM

It's been over a month since I posted on here, but I've really been grinding out some sessions over the last few days in order to get back to SilverStar status as quick as possible. Not sure if I'll be able to do it between now and the end of the month, but I'll give it my best shot.

Sometimes it's good to get away from the game in order to recharge the batteries. In this case, my day job really kept me busy and unfortunately kept me away from the tables, but it actually gave me the break you sometimes need just to keep from getting into a routine and becoming predictable.

Happy to say that I've managed to win about 125 BB over the last week of sessions. Not so happy to say that I only min-cashed 2 out of the 4 tournaments I played last week.

One of the turning points of the week though was going through some of the great videos just to get some ideas from top players in the game. I was going through one of those sessions where it seems like nothing wins at showdown and I'm just spinning my wheels trying to get back on track.

So, back to back to back, I watched the videos from Lex Veldhuis, Eugene Katchalov and Johnny Lodden just to get a sense on how they look at things. They all did a good job in going through the various scenarios in their videos, but I took one big thing away from those videos. The fact was that I was just running into variance more than anything and that things would even out eventually if I just stuck to what I was doing.

The ease at which Lex talked about losing major coin-flips at 10-20 NL was comforting. It was good to hear because he took the couple of minutes during his video to talk about grinding, running into coin-flips and the overall variance of grinding day after day.

Of course, these are all things that we know about as players going at it day-after-day, but it's very easy for the doubt to creep in after a couple of tougher sessions. I'm happy to say that after watching the videos, I had a great session that netted me almost 60 BB.

So, my thanks to Lex, Eugene, Johnny and 19honu62 for the videos that I watched yesterday. If you're here and logged in, you might already take advantage of the content. If you don't and are serious about the game, I highly recommend you take the time to watch and help improve your game.

Good luck at the tables!
