What's Your Best Tournament Advice?

By: dashowkiller @ 06:37 (EDT) / 357 / Comment ( 4 )

Only a couple days away now from the start of MicroMillions and I have to admit that I'm very hesitant about my tournament game right now.

I've had fantastic success at the cash tables over the last 30 days and it's allowed me to pick and choose a big schedule of tournaments for the series. However, my tournament game is just a wreck right now as I try and implement new strategies to try and help me win tournaments instead of just meekly cashing in them.

I almost feel like the high-level golfer who decides that he needs to completely change his swing in order to get to the top level of the game. I just felt like that I had two options:

1) I could choose to just stay where I was and be content with decent results with a good one from time to time.

2) Go through the growing pains of trying out different strategies and trying to evolve my game and get to that next level.

Unfortunately, the growing pains have very painful and to say I'm on a cold streak in tournaments would be a huge understatement. I can't remember the last time I cashed in a tourney and that's REALLY BAD! LOL

Obviously a lot of it has to do with variance and I've had my fair share of bad beats, including some very close to the bubble, but admittedly, there's been a few tournaments where trying out different strategies has cost me my stack within the first few levels.

When I first started playing the game about 15 years ago, I might have avoided those confrontations close to the bubble just to make the money and say that I cashed, but as you realize over time, playing several hours just to min-cash is really annoying.

Tournaments are definitely my biggest leak right now, but who knows? Maybe the series will be my launching point into getting more success in tournaments.

So, any advice for me? I'll take anything right now.

The best phrase I've heard in a while though was the latest video from Chris Moneymaker here on the site when he said this about tournament poker..."To win a tournament, you have to win your aces and win your races." Couldn't have said it any better myself...

Good luck at the tables!
