Omaha Hi (PL)

I am a Omaha lover of the game of poker, i guess it is because of the excitement of the game, & it is mostly a draw game, & because very seldom is the nuts achieved on the flop, but hold on for turn, & river, for the simple reason every player has a combination of 6  cards. To give you an example of how the action can go, hand 1) holds AAK9 Rainbow Hand 2) 7H-8H-6S-5S flop comes A-5H-6-H now hand 1) hods the nuts for now & if it was me i would be betting pot because as of now the pot is mine & if you are going to chase you will pay, but hand 2) is on flush draw & up & down, so what should hand 2 do in this case if you said re-raise you would be correct, with 9 outs for the flush & 8 outs for a straight gives him 17 outs 59.8% favorite to hit, & better than 1 out of 2 times a winner. So lets look at the preflop & Sklansky points to see if these players should have been in the hand. Hand 1)AAK9 points=pair of AA=18pts possible 2 cards for straight=AK=8 total points=26pts Hand 2) Four card straight=5-6-7-8-=25pts 7-8-suited=2pts 5-6- same suit=1pt total pts=28pts So what is the stadrgey. So befoe we answer the question lets see who Sklansky is briefly? David Sklansky is generally considered the number one authority on gambling in the world. Besides his 12 books on the subject David has also produced two videos so if you want to learn more just go to Davids web it is loaded with info on him. Any aspiring not only Omaha but poker player wishing to advave his works are a must have.

His theory on Omaha Hi & i qote " A determination must be made as to which hands qualify as playable. This becomes a function of how many points one decides are necessary befor entering a hand. My suggestion would be to only play hands that earn 28 pts or more. It can be argued that ignoring the rake, any hand with more than a 10% win rate (i.e. those with 20 points or more) is potentially profitable (which any hand is potentially profitabble & when in position only can & should be played  from time to time because of position, it is expected & can work in your favour when you hit the small point hand egn the button & play J-2-4-6-rainbow & flop which is 18pts for 3 card straight minus 2 pts for each gap to complete straight so 18 pts minus 4 pts=14 pts but if you get flop A-3-5 rainbow now you can make people pay to riever chasing their set to full house or higher straight brackets my view  on playing week hands) in the long run. Still, i have the prejudice that most players, & esprcially those who are relatively inexperienced, would be better advised to forsake marginal hands & to focus on those that earn 28 points or more.  Recalling that a random hand will win about 10% of the time in a ten handed game, it can be seen that playing only premium combinations of 28 points or more insures that you wil always have a hand that is 40% better than a random hand. The ttotal reqired to raise or to call someons raise must also be determined subjectively. I feel that 32 points is the appropriate level, so, in summary, You should call with 28 points or more & consider raising with 32 point" end quote

When i first stared Omaha i stuck with the 28 & 32+ method religiously & over the long haul it worked out just fine, & over time i started including 25pt hands & occaisionely 3 card straights=18pts & as i mentioned previously weak hands in position.

The combinations of cards & their values can be obtained on the web. So back to our two hands, by the book hand 1 should have been folded & hand # 2 just makes it. Question is how many could have folded pocket aces?

Just to leave with you the hand Omaha Hi players dream of at night Ak-H AK-S

pocket-ACES=18pts pocket-K=16pts nut flush=A-highx2=16pts 2- straights=16pts=58pts & i say 2 straights for fun because i am chasing 2 royal flushes.
