Many players who are new to poker think that the entire game of poker is focused on high bluffs and bold raises. The reality of online poker games is very different. Bluffing is necessary, after all, because if you never bluff your opponents would know from your stakes that you have a good hand. If you bluff too often or in the wrong situation, you are likely to lose money quickly. In fact, bluff mistakes are some of the most expensive mistakes that new players make. This article explains the common types of bluff and then covers some of the conditions that must exist to ensure that a bluff is successful.

Types of online poker bluffs

Semi-bluff: Surprise many new players to learn that the most common form of bluff includes a great chance of winning the pot when you are paid. Intelligent online poker players are bluffing when potentially good hands, usually on flop, as you can do so here. This may be in the form of a straight or colors. The idea is that a combination of chance that your opponent will fold and you’ll end up with the best hand on the river makes this to be profitable.

Pure bluff: To bet with a good hand and no chance to make the best hand is known as a pure bluff. This is a risky move and you need to be sure that your opponent is able to drop his hand or even consider doing that. Most opponents at low levels are not able to give a hand, making the movement difficult.

Further stake: If you raised before the flop, it is common that you take it in the consideration at the flop even if you missed. This is called a "continuation bet" since it continues with aggression. People often give up if they miss the flop after they have paid the pre-flop - making this move profitable. It also helps to hide those times when you've got a strong hand on the flop and want to start building a big pot.

"Post-oak" Bluff: This is a special one, make a small bet on the river with a failed hand, trying to convince your opponent that you have a monster hand and try to get the most from it. You need to know that your opponent is able to understand what your stake is to gain advantage with this type of bluff.

Full Tilt : Factors that lead to successful bluff

Before attempting to determine the opponents to fold, you must take into account as much as possible the below factors.

# 1 - As few players as possible: The ideal number of opponents to bluff is only one, as you add more than your chances are getting very small. In a low-stakes game, where there are more than two people in hand, you should not bluff without a very good reason.

# 2 - When acting last: When acting last after the flop, your opponent will show weakness with its check. When you are first to act, you have to bet before you see this sign of weak hands. Unless you know that your opponent likes to play check-raise, then acting last is a big advantage.

# 3 - What do you know about your opponents: Some opponents are what is called "payroll" never give up having a chance to win the pot. Others are shy and will give up pretty good hands when the stakes are quite high. Keep an eye on your opponent so you know who you are dealing before you buy.
