My First Qualifier

Hour 1:

So I finally bothered to read the lessons, pass the training and get the qualifier ticket.

I was not comfortable at first. There were no donkeys to take advantage of, no super loose players to exploit. All my novice tricks were taken from me by virtue of the test. And I almost fell over too! A lucky break is what got me from 73 to 63 players. But after some hairy moments i had a stack...and I never looked back.

I tightened up those earlier foolishnesses and got down to making a stab at being sensible. playing patiently. Advantage, the lessons.

After 50 hands I was in first place, with 3 times the ave stack. Things were looking good! Except I had to pee.

I'd seen no aces yet. Do I sit outand take a loo break, or try to maintain concentration for the 6 min to the break? the game was changing..could i afford to miss even watching a round....of course not

I waited. I had to....and a 2G mistake right before the break.

that bladder!

but still first...dont let it go to your head Paul! (thats what was in my head anyway)

Hour 2:

Having money feels worse than not having it......I'm thinking like a novice.Cause thats what I am.How to exploit. to protect:

To SURVIVE!

trip 10's with K kicker on the flop....he took me on for a grand....i push him in... he doesnt bite....dont let it get to you.

the next 20 minutes move in a blur of survival, even though I'm second chip holder..like i said; the curse of more chips.

TomJo59 played well and has come up to equal my chips (chips I am now convinced I won through chance and not good play). I try not to think about where I am and just 'play the cards' and  'play my hand'. It's the Cat 3 hands giving me trouble; I start to feel the power of the chips effecting my choices.

SuperK666 goes 2G all in As3s....I call him on a whim i think...a feeling 8c9s. caught the straight and he called me gay. Sore losers even in the Qualifier I suppose.....Usually its only the donkeys who insult you. But there it is.

2 of 18.......the stress is subsiding. Im loving this game. I start to feel the bubble and I'm loosenning up, keeping wary of  SuperYa1970 to my right. He's a sticky player, chips seem to gravitate toward him.

Only 5 deaths and I'm in the money.

TomJo took out my sticky right hand man; he is now the big Kahuna, with me behind by 3g (ever decreasing blind amounts)

. I try not to feel my position a fluke.....the words of my last victim do not gain traction, though they try. Ive made it!

..............................................................................................................................................................................

THE MONEY

Finally...my aces....but what to do. crap they all folded before i got to think....

An important psychological victory against TonJo helped me to allay my paranoia about the yellow G chip raise.. I can tell you. to a novice, it is Haarrrrrrrd! to lower the importance of the larer raises as the blinds go up. Am I out of my league.....onnly a pro could tell me...

I still cannot shake the want to knock out small stacks going all in....until i remember that that is how a cobra strikes.

9 left.......

I forgot to tighten back up......oops!

no harm done..

with 7 left i know im out of my depth... i can feel my strategies wavering. i am becoming timid and i can feel others starting to take advantage. Tally49 especially (good  player I feel)

There is less to say about this part of the game.I am, essentially, a deer in headlights trying to survive as long as possible...

5 left....

and im 5, and feeling bled. I wait to pounce......

8c9c...pounce....folds

10c4c pounce.......folds

Nulovic stabbed me good....and only 4BB left... he had pocket 6 i had pocket 2....3 3 on the table...much slow play. ouch!

pocket A . YES! UP TO 8g IN WITH A CHANCE?

ALL IN ON AN OFF SUIT ACE... LOST...

BUT NOT REALLY

5th place for my first qualifier. I only hope the lessons continue to stick, and my game gets better and better
