Tilt is a cruel thing

I played poorly in the MicroMillions-043 last night. It was all pretty solid for the first hour of play, then I got caught out. I picked up A8 on the button with a stack of around 2,500, and raised it to 400. SB called, and the BB (who was the biggest stack at the time) called as well. The flop came down 4 6 8 rainbow. It was checked round, I raised to 500. SB folded, BB called. Turn comes down, another 8. This is where I should have shoved. Instead, I only raised again to 800. Another call, and only after the river comes down, a 7, have I realised my mistake. If the BB had a 5, I was screwed. I shoved for the rest of my stack, he calls, and reveals pocket 5s.

I was furious with myself, and tilt continued. I busted out very early in the next couple of Open Skill League events, although luck wasn't on my side either, having AJ vs K6, hitting top pair on the flop, two-pair on the turn, only for the river to give him a straight. That didn't help my tilting, so I gave up for a bit.

My league score had gone down from 1,648 to 1,610. So I went and got some sleep, determined to put that right after I woke up. I cashed the next one I played, and narrowly missed the bubble on the second one, bringing my score back up to 1,640. Not quite the 1,700 I was hoping for, but at least I'm back on track.

Tilt is the debatedly wost enemy of a poker player. It is a game where you must remain mentally strong to succeed. I'm glad this particular instance I was only playing free tournaments, it would have affected me more if I were playing cash. Hopefully, I can dwell on this experience in future, and not let it affect me too much again.
