"Gonzo Note-taking" - A true story

By: slettuce @ 23:20 (EDT) / 414 / Comment ( 0 )

The last week felt very "robotic" for me,  playing long MTTs definitely "drains" me, and when they are over (no matter what the result), I feel a little bit "empty".

That "zing" I had two days ago seems to be A.W.O.L - I couldn't let this "mindset" take hold, thinking about when I will play the next 6 hour tournament, or when I'm going to "run-deep" again.. ie.  I shouldn't be thinking about these things at all after a 2 day session............ it is wasted "thoughts", my brain is an empty fuel tank at this point,  and I don't want it to be empty...............so I decided to start taking "Gonzo notes" on a player that got my attention (there's always one, then another pops up etc).....

So here's what I did, the hands, what I wrote in Notes about them, everything..........unedited , for your entertainment and maybe a little bit of a nudge for inspiration with very little effort and great reward.

I decided to  play two STT SnG tables then go to sleep, but here I am...  typing away.......

The idea came to me in the third hand of the one STT I played .... here's the hand...

I know I was beat, but this player intrigued me, and I needed to take some notes. Here's the notes.......

1. "He thinks he owns me....mmmmmmm .....something seems odd".

Then four hands later..........

(He had )......  yup....note taking time for this dude. I decided to see what happened to his stack while I was not paying attention..........

I went back to hand 4 or thereabouts to see what happened to his stack.......... here's what happened.........

Made a note......... "He thinks he owns everyone".....  He had .....

Made a note......"He got me, Playing queens that way, yup he got me but I felt a bit of "cockyness" in his bet sizing, trying to show me he gets pocket pairs...............  impressive, I even called him with King High, this note was worth the 100 chips".

Time to start destroying him, and being short stacked makes it easier.

Made a note........"Glad I got these notes on this clown, at least I have notes or ramblings, but it is info, good info.......think he is going to implode shortly".

And he did, another dude busted him two hands later,   like Hussain Bolt vs Doyle.  No offense, just an analogy.

So the above notes that I took, I'm calling "Gonzo Note Taking", in honour of HST, he invented the style and it fits nicely into a poker game,  and it brought back that "zing" I thought was missing forever.

In fact, there was another player who was playing at the same two tables as I was.

Here are a few "notes" I took on him after the first guy busted, I also busted out later on that table, but check out how this whole "mad, sleep deprived plan" was actually starting to take shape.

So, after taking the note I saw that bright green ring appear on the other table.

Sigh............here, watch for yourself,  the hand tells the story without my help at all.....

(umm...cough......he had 8J off,      sorry, wasn't meant to add anything, ignore last comment).

He eventually imploded (as expected)...............and the "Gonzo Note-Taking" helped me at least finish 3rd in the last one (if a player is on a suicide mission, I'm not stopping him, in fact, I might take some notes on his downfall and fold my way into 3rd).

I didn't need anymore, just watching him and recording notes on his "strategy" was all I really needed after the last 3 days/nights and it made me want to share these closing moments that felt so dull when I started playing this eveining,  but it got me to type this whole weird blog story, which helped me forget about trying to predict the future when I should be sleeping, but I needed something and I found it................. "Gonzo Note-Taking" - that was the closure to my weekend session I needed,  and hope you can make some sense out of it and/or I hope you enjoyed reading about my crazy "winding down" revelation becauase I sure had a blast writting about it.

**To be used only when needed............eg. brain dead situations for me, or 24 multitabling for all you guys......    it's up to you.

(The return of the Sunday Special was great fun, the TT working, home game running smoothly, all the celebs present (dave, fist, brett, easy et al .......  I just didn't want it to end.....................hence this blog).

Cya next time
