I just came across this dilemma, I think it is really interesting so I thought I would post it up. So what do you think is the best course of action in this situation, and more importantly, why?

Two people get nicked and are locked up in separate cells. The police have insufficient evidence for a conviction, so they offer the two suspects the same deal. If one of them testifies for the prosecution, and the other one remains silent, the person who testifies will walk free and the person who remains silent will get a full one-year sentence. If they both decide to testify then the police will pin them both for a 6-month sentence. And if they both remain silent then the police will charge them both with a minor offence, and they will both receive only a one-month sentence.

So what should either of them do, remain silent or testify?

It worth noting that they the suspects are kept entirely separate and have no knowledge of the other person’s choice. Also the suspects have no emotional attachments to each other and their only goal is to minimise their time in prison.

Lol yer I guess this is more of a hypothetical scenario, although the solution does have real world consequences. In the real world I would have to agree, in any situation like this you should shut up and get a lawyer.

However in this scenario the choices and the consequences are fixed, a lawyer won’t do chit. Do you still shut up or testify?

ok,

l'm in one room, your in the other,

l keep it shut,

you talked,

when l see you in a year, oh no, someone will be saying ouch,

a long time ago, l was sort of a bad guy, been in this spot sort of,

coppers split us up, and try to get us to rat on each other, we keep our mouth shut,

good lawyers, beat the rap, we so happy

then awhile later, another guy and l get into some trouble, he rats,

l get out even the score, if you know what l mean, the worse part for him was, he's labeled a rat for life,

theres jail, which you do your time, and its over, being a rat stays with you for life,

cheers

Fair point.

But let’s pretend that there are no consequences other than those outlined in the original scenario. If someone rats nobody would ever know. So the only goal for the suspects is to minimise their time in prison in these specific circumstances.

There are ALWAYS consequences. One for me would be that I would know I ratted. And the person I have to look at in the mirror everyday is me,and like eff where I came up and how I came up---YOU DON'T EFFIN RAT. Not if you did dirt yourself and you're talking to get the heat off your ass.

In your scenario I dummy up and do my month standing on my head. And seeing that the choice of talking and walking in your scenario meant that someone else would eat a year,if I have to eat a year then I'm going to know the why. After the year is up I'm for damned sure going to find out the who.

Mox n Eff, I totally feel ya. But lets just pretend that this is a game and the only goal is to minimise your time in prison. How would you play this rationally, without any emotional or moral ties?

do the year is not a choice. it's either testify or stay silent. and the decision should be based on logic.

Well smax- if this is a riddle- and it must be - the answer is in the first line-- the police do not have enough for a conviction--- any crook worth his salt knows if the police has him or not-- so stay silent and go home for dinner-- meet your partner for a drink- and divide the spoils---

Yeah and like I said in my earlier post if I have to eat a year then I'm going to reckon that someone else got the same offer I did and dropped dime on my ass. I do the year and then I tool up the rat.
