've never been one to have hobbies nor have I ever collected anything. In fact I don't think I've ever made a sustained effort in learning or pursuing anything that didn't have a direct benefit to either school or work.

Poker is the only past-time I have ever consistently wanted to do, or learn to do better and I've been playing for over three years now, ever since I saw my first wpt game on TV. I can and have spent countless hours reading, watching and debating poker hands and I've pulled many overnighters where I've foregone sleep because I really wanted to continue playing and I haven't even won any serious money yet!!

And having read and spoken to many poker players both on this blog and at the tables, I know I'm not the only one.

So here's my question to all you bloggers out there:
Why is poker such an awesome game?

Hi shivaa.

Well I'll take a crack at this by listing some of the things I love about poker...

1. Anyone can play.

2. You can teach someone the rules and bare bones of the game in a matter of minutes, but NO ONE will ever truly master the game. No matter how hard and long they try.

3. That being said whilst one can never master the game, the game can help one master themselves.

4. I'm never going to get to play a competitive round of golf against Tiger Woods, skate in on a breakaway against an NHL goalie, hit off of Justin Verlander in a regulation games and countless other similar scenarios...however I CAN possibly sit down one day with the best poker players in the world. And in that scenario even the donkiest of donks can take a hand off a Phil Ivey or Gus Hansen.

5. It's NOT Go Fish.

6. Many players think it IS Go Fish.

7.A great way to meet a lot of great peeps. The "social" aspect of poker is truly a great thing.

8. Any two cards can win.

9. Any two cards can lose.

10. It's a never ending battle one has with oneself. On many levels.

Poker is a horrible, evil, ugly, rigged, backstabbing, unfair kick in the head. I do love it so.

Hi Shivaa,

Like you, I never had a hobby or past time that did not relate to work or family. Five years into retirement a friend invited me to a home game and I have been hooked on poker for the last seven years. I found PokerStars through television ads and have been a semi-regular on the site ever since. Luckily, I live north of the 49th parallel, in Canada, and was not impacted like our American friends when Black Friday hit in April.

I used to teach math, so the probabilities and odds attracted me to the game. Whether I am playing live games or online, I continue to learn - and life-long learning is apparently good for my old brain.

Welcome to the PSO forums and good luck in PokerStars.

Herk

Lol, FLsnookman - Many ofl those adjectives could be applied to a high-maintenance girlfriend!

Moxie Pip: I've been on both sides of the fishes debate, lol.

Thanks for the welcome, Herkstwin! I'm also a Canadian and I'm happy to see so many canucks playing and winning on pstars and at the big live events.

I like the community here too. I think it's very unique to pstars because other poker sites like partypoker and tiger gaming really don't encourage any interaction among the players, let alone positive interaction such as community blogs and moderated chats.

I've never ventured out much into the live games other than the falls view casino once or twice a year with my brother and a boatload of friends so online is definitely where I meet fellow poker players.

One reason I think Poker is a really awesome game is because it seems to use every ounce of my brain capacity. When I'm playing well, It's alsmost like I can read the other players minds.

I like the math part and the instinctive parts involved in poker decisions and all what Moxie Pip said (so well) too

Thanks for the welcome, and good luck with your blogs
Shivaa

my short answer is poker is awesome because it is a game of life, with lessons to be learned morals, and feel good stories, as well as passion, heartbreak, and the thrill of the gamble. Also because the possibilities are endless lol. i<3poker =)

Cheers,
BawMe
