Standard thoughts for the cost of set mining are:

Under 5% of your chips, it is cheap enough usually.

Over 10% of your chips, it is almost never worth while.

Between 5% and 10% of your stack, you really need to know the chips are there to pay you off at about 10 or 12 to 1 for your investment.

Not only do the chips need to be there, but the play patterns of your opponent(s) must make a large pay off possible as well.

So based on what you have said about the villain here in your other post, a set mining shot of 3BB (calling 2BB from the blind, off a 35BB stack is 5.5%) is probably ok. He is the type who is likely to pay you off big time, and he has the chips to do so.

Calling the raise he made though, 5BB to go, is too expensive and too risky.

Hope it helps.

And most regs like to see 13-15/1 to ofset the times you dont hit AND the times you hit and still lose. So this (about) 7/1 effective isn't even close. ez fold

The huge raise often signifies a huge hand, making me love my implied odds to hit a set. Out of position it's a little annoying though, so I could really go either way. This just looks like the kind of guy who will pay me off nicely.

Forgot to add, It's dependent on the player, but most guys who are raising to such a large PFR are terrible and will pay you off. This is why I definitely consider calling despite all the negatives (position, stack size).

I agree as above but wish to point out something you seem to be missing. You don't have 35 bb's becasue you are not factoring in the ante's. Every cycle you are losing 1 bb because of this. When factoring in the ante's with a pot of 405 chips you now have 19 bb's. This is a fold regardless IMO but I wanted to stress that too many people are missing the value of the ante's. The blinds are actually roughly 130/275.

yes, you definitely need to account for this. The antes are 20 chips each for 9 hands per round, which is 180 chips. If you put basically 2/3's of it into the big blind and the rest into the SB.... the effective blinds here are 130/275 if you include the antes.
