Hey everyone! I've decided to start annotating my blog with a song of the day sort of thing. Maybe I'll post a couple songs that I'm currently feeling, or at least a couple of artists that I'm really feeling. Anyway! My question is this, or correction, my questions are these?

1. Do you listen to music while you play/listen to music to keep composure?

2. If question 1 is a yes, then what music do you listen to? If its a no, then I only had one question and my entire post is askew. :O

Cheers,

Gerard.

The music I listen too when playing poker should be like a movie soundtrack - adding to the experience without taking away your concentration on the main visual information that you need to focus on.

My standard music when playing poker is classical - your big two - Beethoven and Mozart provide a large quantity of this - its relaxing and uplifting without being too distracting or intrusive.

If I'm playing well and on a roll and I've been playing for a long while I might have some Wagner or Mahler - but you have to pick the right ones or it can be depressing.

If I'm in a turbo game I'd pick something faster - but mostly I'm going for something slowish.

Having said this - I'm a big fan of a lot of modern music - lots of the pop/rock/indie genres from the 1950's to today's stuff - but most of it is too short and too distracting. If I play anything modern that I like I just get too distracted and my poker becomes about as good as my singing.

I can maybe play poker to some Nick Cave or Beck, or anything else I like and am so familiar with it is going to lift my mood without distracting me too much.

Hey FurryWallz!

I do sometimes listen to music playing (when I don't have my tv on). As to what music I'm listening to, it'll depend on my mood. Could be anything from country, to classic rock, to many other things.... but you'll never hear me listening to hip-hop or rap.. can't stand the stuff.

Hi furry, I do not listen to music when I am playing but I am going to start doing. My normal music is rap,hip hop and dance lol Jw, but may go down edinfreemans path with some classical I can see why that would create the right atmosphere.

Im listening to Cat Stevens today. I like listening to music. I'm a modern guy myself. I can understand the shortness changing tempo of play and such. Like when you listen to music while running or walking, and your pace changes to the music.

I like easy listening/soft rock- Bruce Sprinsteen/Cat Stevens today for instance.

Thrash metal like Metallica's first 4 albums would probably be great for Turbos as well. Any really fast, really aggressive music like that would seem to be the mindset you want to be feeding more than any other in those games. There was a thrash punk band here in the States in the early '80's called The Minutemen (their songs were usually well less than 2 minutes long...RIP D.Boon) who would be great for this as well.

Except for the .02 990 Hyper-turbo drooler fests...for those I would put on Alvin and the Chipmunks and listen to it on Fast Forward.

I usually don't listen to music while I play, but when I do I listen to a playlist of things like Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Marduk, Nile, Amon Amarth, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, or maybe even some Draconian or Swallow the Sun. Makes you want to kill your opponents with a hammer. ....

I try not to listen to anything new or unfamiliar because that would draw attention away from the game. So classic rock, some heavy, some prog, gets the most time from me...something I know well enough to know the mood it's going to put me in.
For a lot of listings by the gang, check out this thread.

Good to see you back Dan.
Here's quote for you:

Information is not knowledge.
Knowledge is not wisdom.
Wisdom is not truth.
Truth is not beauty.
Beauty is not love.
Love is not music.
Music is the best.

Funny about the music thread popping up.
There are lots of composers I admire, but two in particular.
One was born on Dec. 21st, exactly 50 years before my son was, and it's his quote in my post above.

The other was born on Feb. 29th, and he lived up to it :)

Dec. 21st is quite a date as well, you know.

First couple years of playing online poker I listened to music the entire time I played and it was almost always just one band, 311. They go really great together for some reason. A couple of their songs even seem poker themed, although I never really payed attention to the lyrics enough to know for sure.

A couple years ago there was a 2 month period where I would 6-table the micro 2NL cash tables while drinking and listening to the band Saosin (man those were the good old days, 2NL was so bad you could show a profit while not even seeing straight). They don't make the best music in the world, but something about their overly tuned vocals felt good while grinding the tables lol.

I now have a new music theme in relation to poker. I play live cash now and I don't listen to any music while playing. On the way to the casino and sometimes afterwards I listen to dubstep. Not an expert on the genre, but it seems to be rather aggressive and I think it pumps me up before I arrive at the casino. Poker is a battle so might as well listen to some war music before you buy-in and sit down with the enemy.

I dont listen to Dubstep either but Skrillex is making names for himself. I've been enjoying some of his remixes lately.
