Junior Seau, a 43-year old 12-time NFL Pro Bowl linebacker, was found dead today in his home, the result of a gunshot wound, police confirmed.

Police are investigating the shooting at the Oceanside, Calif., residence of the former New England Patriot and San Diego Chargers football star as a suicide. Police confirmed that Seau was found by his girlfriend at his beachfront home with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Police received a call at 9:35 a.m. PST from Seau's girlfriend, who informed police Seau was unconscious with a gunshot wound, before making their way to Seau's house and performing "life saving" efforts on him in his bedroom, according to police. A handgun was found.

Hard to imagine what circumstances could lead to this, you would think a guy that was a star in th e NFL would have everything to live for - just makes you think.

Very sad. The NHL had a bad offseason where a group of gritty players passed away due to suicide. They didn't show the "signs" but concussions and brain damage were speculated as the main cause.

We may have to re-evaluate our sports if this trend continues.

Seau is the eighth member of the 1994 San Diego Chargers AFC Championship team to die at a very young age.

Junior was a true warrior, throwing his body around the field with reckless abandon, but always with a distinct purpose as he was also a student of the game. And he was as great a leader and motivator as I have ever seen on the field and I've seen every game that Ray Lewis has ever played,so that's saying something in regard to Junior.

Just what could have led to this we may never know but I can't help but thinking there's probably a relation to the increasingly frequent and increasingly disturbing stories we keep hearing as to chronic and debilitating head trauma that NFL players are susceptible to and the life altering and life shortening results.

These men are literally in many cases trading years, possibly a decade or 2,of their lives in order to play in the NFL and try to reap the rewards that can come there way. Next time we gripe about how much they make,or how the game is being "sissified" with the rules that are coming in to try and make the game a little safer, please ask yourself this...

...would YOU knowingly undertake an endeavor that will very possibly shorten your life expectancy in a serious way for a chance to make some big bucks?

Because that's what these young men do every time they step on the field.

Here's hoping that in light of this sad end to Junior Seau's life he can maybe lead just one more time and get the focus on the NFL and head trauma to shine even brighter so that maybe, just maybe,we can have a game that is still exciting but with equipment and rules that make his tale and the many like it a much more remote occurrence.

RIP Junior and condolences to your family.

It's soooo sad, I can't imagine the circumstances that could lead to this. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
