After 5 days of entering Open League games and sitting out ( and not using the time bank ), I have come to the conclusion that you dont have to play a hand to get some cash.I have seen recent posts by Sandtrap,JWK,and Havoc and others that say otherwise but they offered no proof so I am going to ! Watch my blog over the next 25 days and and we will see exactly where I finish. The results so far might surprise a few as they did me , so much so I thought I would post here so anyone can watch my games just to see Im not actually playing !

It will only work at the start of the month.
Once you get to around 1800 points and you sit out you will start losing points, The higher up the ladder you go the more points you will lose if you just sit out.
Good Luck anyway.

Agreed Chucky. I believe the old numbers ran something along these lines, and your score depends on: starting points you have, # of players(10,000 usually), skill rating of players in tourney. This is an old outline I used for a while in open league when I played. Start of month, you start with 1500

Starting points/# of players/skill rating of players in tourney

1500 10000 / ?? you need to finish top 33% for

+ points

1600 10000 / ??/ need finish top 30%

1700 10000 / ??/ top 26%

1800 10000 / ??/ top 22%

the higher your starting points, the higher you need to finish.

This works a lot like a graded curve, the more you advance on the leaderboard, the higher you need to finish in each tourney to get + points, and when you fail to reach these marks, you lose points.

Good Luck in the Open League! If you need advice, theres lots of good guys willing to give good advice in the forum here.

This is a post by 1 of the masters of the leagues, Ed.

Time banking, usually used along with folding all but the very strongest preflop hands (AA/KK) is of use in the PSO Open Skill League due to the way points are awarded for consistent semi-deep finishes but lost for early bust outs.

You can time-bank/fold every tourney and just blind down to around the top 20-25% of the field without playing any hands, due to the very fast attrition rate - and when you get a monster and gain chips as well you will run deeper and pick up extra points.

Doing this consistently will normally gain more points, (and lose less), over a month than a few very deep runs and lots of early busts, which is what will tend to happen if you play a more standard tournament strategy with a lower ITM/(or lower average placing)

If you want to make the Premier League you need to be in the top 500 of the Open Skill League and earn 20+VPPs - the top 500 is easy to make using this strategy if you can play a lot of tourneys over the month.

The strategy does not work anywhere else - not in the PSO Premier Skill League, or in the Hubbles.

Thanks for your thoughts guys but I fail to understand why at 1800 you cant go any further. Surely this depends on where you finish among other things.A good finish say 1500th will get you positive points even if you are sitting on 1800 points.I also think you would get to a stage where you even out and dont really go forward or backward.
So after a dozen or so games Im sitting in 477th position on 1692 points ( and havent got a minus score yet ! ).

Hi Spartan,
It took me a while to find it but here is the scoring formula.
Since they change the Forum layout it's hard to find anything.
Especially if you didn't know it existed.

The proof is all there in the historical data - look at the end of month scores for last months OSL winner

SCORE HISTORY FOR ZOLOTOY83
Date Participants Position Start Scored End
31 Oct 21:00 ET 9963 169 2836.95 37.79 2874.74
29 Oct 05:00 ET 10000 290 2805.67 31.28 2836.95
28 Oct 21:00 ET 10000 544 2790.47 15.2 2805.67
28 Oct 17:00 ET 10000 337 2760.58 29.89 2790.47
28 Oct 09:00 ET 10000 319 2728.62 31.96 2760.58
28 Oct 05:00 ET 10000 828 2724.53 4.09 2728.62
27 Oct 21:00 ET 10000 980 2725.58 -1.05 2724.53
27 Oct 17:00 ET 10000 503 2704.60 20.98 2725.58
27 Oct 09:00 ET 10000 733 2695.71 8.89 2704.60
27 Oct 05:00 ET 10000 956 2694.73 0.98 2695.71
26 Oct 21:00 ET 9992 1412 2705.57 -10.84 2694.73
26 Oct 17:00 ET 10000 1072 2708.04 -2.47 2705.57

You can blind down to a certain point - 1800th regularly, maybe as deep as 1,300th in some tourneys - but you need to get deeper than this to make positive points in the later weeks of the each month if you already have a good score on the board - to finish below 1,200th you usually need to play and win at least one hand.

Thanks Chuckkky, Ed ,that scoring formula is way over the top ! Do they recruit people from NASA to think up something like that ?
Ed I'm not trying to win a heap of money , but just to see if it's possible to cash so I think it's probably better to focus on the person who finished 2000th rather than 1st.I agree it's harder to get points later in the month but I'm getting closer to my target area every day .I just had another 1300 result ( 9 points ) and now only need just over 100 points to cash if last months results are any guide .

Currently position 468 , 1745 points

This is beginning to look as if it may be achievable. If it is achieved then they have to reduce the number of payouts to 1000 people and increase the prize to $5.00. Otherwise the open league just becomes a bit of a joke if you can just sit out every game and cash at the end of the month.

Cheers,

TC

It does look achievable - you are still picking up positive points for finishes around 2,200 and better - which is still well in the zone for blinding down to.

I will be interested to see how far you get - my guess is you will be within the top 2,000 with ease, and maybe even close to the next money jump at 500th.

Good luck

Ed

If I were a bettingman(oh, yeah, I am), I'd bet he tops out between 1950 and 2050. It's really tough unless you get a good deep run late in the month. I never had the time to put enough tourneys in since the new league took effect, and don't see it in my future.

Well the positive scores keep rolling on .Have now broken the "magical" 1800 point barrier with a monster 20 point 1213 /10000 game ! Imagine if I was using the time bank as well !

I might have a small problem tho , I dont want to qualify for Premier League ( just not +EV enough for me )

So currently 450th ,1807 points

Cheers !!!

Had the biggest game yet last night scoring 27 points for a 935/10000 finish !It certainly helps when you are the only sitter on a very slow table .

So it looks like it over doesn't it .I just wonder where I can finish .

Currently 372nd , 1843 points

I would go to 1900 points and stop to be on the safe side. All you have to do is look at previos months. It takes a little less than 1900 points to stay above 2000th place and a little more than 2150 to stay above 500th place by the end of the month. That is your safe zone for min cashing witout going into premier league if you are over 20 vpp. If you have less than 20vpp you don't have to worry about going too high. Hope this helps and good luck.

PS. I have not actualy bothered to try it, but from my experience in the open league, I have no doubt that you will make it if not there already.

Well thats it , job done .I really didnt think it was going to be so easy . After iggio's post I played a few trial games and was amazed at the results, hence the challenge.

The scores are starting to even out now and probably wont make Premier League ( shucks ) but will be able to have a real shot at Open League next month .

Dukpond, I'm going to keep playing just to see where I end up !

Currently 435th , 1969 points after 55 games

Cheers

I am not saying it is cheating but find it sad that if you want to make it in the top 500 you need to do same thing as others are doing specially if you can't play every tourny as some seems to be able to do.

So I will start to do the same or not play at all as the people in charge does not seem to take it seriously only to say we are not doing any change at this time.

It would be so easy to fix the problem as Pokerstars did with their freeroll games as people were doing the same. Pokerstars just added antes from the beginning which solved the problem of people sitting out into the ticket. Even though some are still doing it they don't even get close to make it now.

Why Pokerschool are not in a hurry to do something only them know why.

It's quite possible to make the premier league playing one game per day, maybe an extra on weekends. I've done it a few times, without sitting out any games. I just played them when I was already playing other games, when you're playing super tight (AA, maybe KK) the game doesn't require a lot of attention till the later stages.

I did run my clock every hand, but at least you have to be at the table to use that option. But whatever works, however you can beat the system, more power to you.

Hi Skeldarkday , joy ,you both make good points . Antes would probably do it .
Paying only 90 places in a field of 10000 freeroll its always going to be a donkfest .So thats why there are so many sitters . Maybe the payouts could be extended to at least 15% so it might stop all the all ins in the first 15 minutes , but if you are not playing for points you are going to play very aggressively.( hence the value of sitting out )

I agree they do need to look at the current format.

Cheers

Just had a massive game ! Finished 798th in a field of 8062. Imagine if I was using the timebank ! A probable 20 point gain and possible Premier League invite. Woot Woot !!

ps the whole table folded to my BB once. lol.
