An ace is considered a high cad in hold'em? or does it work as a low card? Reason asking an ace was used as a low card for a straight when I had to pairs matched on board 2 - 6 player was holding KA off suited so how did I lose the hand.

Yes, an Ace can be low when used as the low card in an A2345 straight or straight flush. These hands are often referred to as the wheel and the steel wheel respectively. This also applies for Omaha and stud. Split pot games and low games can be different, so check to see what the particular rules are for each game before you start playing. This can be done from the PokerStars client under help, then games.

Good luck
