Next Step

Next up play some 9-handed full-ring play money tables. Make sure the tables have no empty seats.

Find a hand that caused you difficulty or cost you chips and using the hand replayer post it here in the Forum.

Here is a video on how to use the hand replayer.

Once you've posted your hand we will analyse it for you and then continue on from there.

Runner Runner?

I had QJ raised preflop, checked the flop thinking button will bet, turn comes putting two clubs on the board, I lead out and bet, both call, third club comes on the river, I check, go bets 10, button raises to 100, I reraise, I get reraised, call, call. Guy caught runner runner club flush.

Hi Mr.Gedge!

With QJo from UTG, I'm going to muck this preflop. There are too many people left to act that could show up with a better J or better Q. If I was in late position, then I'd make an opening raise with it, but from early position, I'm mucking it and looking for a spot in position or with better cards.

If I did play it, I would make a standard open-raise, which is to 3BB+1BB for each limper. Since I'm first to act, I'll raise to 3BB or 30.

I flop top pair into a 5-way pot. Here, I need to make a bet both for value for my top pair, but to see where I'm at in the hand. Due to having 4 opps in the hand, I'll lead for a pot-sized bet of 215. I do not want to bet less here or to check as this will give the opps the correct odds to try to outdraw me (straight draw or overcards).

The same thing on the turn. With 4 opps in the hand, I need to make a pot-sized bet here too (if I had less opps in the hand, then I could bet less, even only 1/2 pot if I only had one opp). By betting less than this, I now give the opps the correct odds to draw to a straight, flush or overcards... something that I do not want to do.

The river completes both the straight and the flush and here I'm going to check and call a small bet, but fold to a larger bet. My hand does have some showdown value, but is crushed by both a straight or flush, so I do not want to call a large bet.

Yes, the opp did hit runner/runner, but they did so because I priced them into their draw. Due to this, it's my own fault if I lose the hand, since I gave the opps a positive play to try to outdraw me. When I have the best hand, I need to bet enough that the opps have a negative play to try to outdraw me, not to bet small or check and give them a positive play.

Hope this helps and good luck at the tables.

John (JWK24)

Yeah i agree with everything you said, I would have bet the flop, but with the amount of callers, i was sure one of them, especially the button would make a bet, and I would re-raise them and take the pot down right there and then.

Hi Mr.Gedge,

You've passed the basics quiz, congrats on that!

Your first buy-in will be credited into your account within 24 hours.

Use this first buy-in to then play ONLY the 1/2 cent full ring real money tables only on PokerStars. Playing any other game format will disqualify you from being able to obtain further buy-ins through this promotion.

Post back here when you get your first buy-in and start playing these games, along with a hand that you had problems, or that cost you money, while playing with this buy-in.

Good luck!
