Hi guys another unusual line,

My question is about protection bets.

Is the villain betting the flop because he has a piece of it or because of the board and can represent a better hand protecting a worse one?

I raise KdQh from the co, bb calls and donks big on Ah5dAd flop.

Seeing the nuts back-doors and actually not believing an Ace due to the villain's bet size I do another float.

Ok now we check it down and see 2 free cards. But I have a another question.

Was I too passive when the villain checked a turn 8h?

I could of bet and taken it down rather than thinking the float call was >>enough money invested<<.

Thanks guys for your comments on my "fun in the micros" hands. There is a serious point to showing these examples.

Not quite worked out myself what the serious point is yet.

PS. Was playing 2 5NL Zoom tables to get a feel for it again and $7 on the other table. So a slightly shorter stack may give me an edge.

Hi Forrest,

In my opinion that donkbet on the flop looks like a pocket pair, or a 5 coming from suited conectors maybe... When he checks the turn, i think he has some pocket pair, some hand with showdown value... And most of the times one street of agression is not enough to get him off the hand.

Hope it helps...

You are basically asking what he is thinking with this action... the answer is I have no idea what some random unknown 5NL player is thinking.

What it usually means is a marginal made hand or a draw. The marginal made hand category could be anything from a weak 5 (54s type hand) up to a weak ace. I would generally fold or raise here, don't really like floating much as if he barrels we'll have to give up and the villain might interpret a call as hands that don't like the aces and barrel away. Who knows. If we raise him though I expect him to usually fold all non-ace hands, and to call Ax and draws, and check the turn to us, allowing us to take a free card if we pick up one of our back door draws.

Without history or reads folding is fine.
