Hi pokergeek201,

You are eligible for the Bankroll Builder promotion, good job!
NB: Bookmark this page so that you'll find it easily in the future

First Step

Watch the following video and pay special attention to the tips on retrieving and saving your hand history from PokerStars. This will be important for the rest of your promotional journey.

After wacthing this please play some PLAY MONEY FULL-RING (9-Handed) tables at PokerStars and using the Hand Replayer post a hand here in this thread that you have questions about.
Here is a video on how to use the hand replayer.

Then when you have that done please have a go at the Poker Basics Course and pass the quiz at the end of the course.
So you have 3 steps to do to begin with and when you have all 3 done we will award you with your first bonus.

1) Watch the 'Getting Started' video
2) Post a 'PLAY MONEY' hand here in the Forum using the Hand Replayer
3) Pass the Poker Basic course.

Let us know as soon as you have all 3 steps completed.

Best of Luck!

Hi pokergeek!

This looks like a playmoney tournament hand. That's fine, but for the remainder of this promotion, you should play 9-handed ring games where the blinds are fixed.
Here you have 66 under the gun (UTG) and you're fairly short-stacked on 20bb. A small pocket pair is a good hand to have in late position when you can call a raise and go set-mining, or sometimes raise and steal the blinds, but in early position it's trickier because if you raise, you're likely to get at least one caller (so you'll be out of position) or even get re-raised or shoved on.
With this stack size and position, I think the best play would be to make a reluctant fold. You're unlikely to have the best hand, and conserving tournament chips is crucial. I'd also fold this hand UTG in a cash game.
If you do decide to play the hand, then I'd recommend you make a small raise (so you might see a flop cheaply, or could fold to a shove) or you could go directly all in, to maximise "fold equity" and make it less likely that you'll get called. (Stealing the blinds also adds a chunk of chips to your stack).
The problem with your raise of 5bb is that it pot-commits you. Once you've put in a quarter of your stack, you have to call the shove(s). A big stack took a chance here and called with a ragged ace. You were a big favourite to win against A4, but he got lucky this time.

Best of luck in the next stage of the promo!
Cheers,
Arty

Hi pokergeek201,

My apologies, step one requires the poker basics course, and the system will not let you try any others before this one.

Your tasks were:
1) Watch the 'Getting Started' video
2) Post a 'PLAY MONEY' hand here in the Forum using the Hand Replayer
3) Pass the Poker Basic course.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Excellent!

You've done all 3 tasks and you'll get your first bonus in the next 24 hours, good job!

Step Two

Use your first buy-in to only play the 1/2 cent real money FULL RING tables on PokerStars. Do not play any other type of game other than this. Post one hand that you had difficulty with here in this thread using the hand replayer and we will analyze it for you.
Please watch the following video and answer the question below.

List 3 reasons why a player may want to make a big bet?

Then study the Cash Game Course and once your happy have a go at attempting the quiz. Don't rush through the course, there's a lot of content there and the quiz is tricky so spend some time on this.

So you have 3 things to do to earn your next bonus.

1) Play the 1/2 cent Real Money tables and post an interesting hand here in the Forum using the Hand Replayer.
2) Watch the Bet Sizing video and answer the question below it.
3) Study and pass the Cash Game quiz.

Let us know as soon as you have all 3 tasks complete and we will award you with your next buy-in.

Hi pokergeek201!

Nice hand! I'm curious what type of read you had on the villain? With small pairs like your 66 we often get into trouble calling such large preflop raises. 5bb is getting expensive since we usually have to fold to a c-bet on the flop. You will only flop a set 1 in 8 attempts and overcards will come pretty much every hand. This creates difficult postflop situations for smallish pairs. Against an unknown, I would typically fold preflop. Remember the original limper might come over the top.

As played, you got a good flop since it is unlucky to have helped the villain much. Calling the flop (floating) can often work if you intend to bet the turn. Nice job following through on the turn

I'm not sure of your river bet size though. With 98 cents in the pot and only 42 cents in your stack, your 20 cent bet may not be optimal. If the villain is willing to call 20 cents, he probably would have called 42 cents since it is not even half the pot. This would give you maximum value on your hand.

This hand worked out nicely for you, and I like your postflop play. However, be careful about getting into marginal spots like this in the first place. At 2NL there are so many opportunities to valuebet in clear spots that risking your most of your stack with second best pair in marginal spots like this one is not necessary.

GL and have fun at the tables!
