Lovely hand to get early in a tourney but should I have stacked off this early? I have no reeds on the players

Hi Michae2005!

I know this tourney well (played over 160 of them before black Friday). With a bad hand in Q2s, when it's a limpfest in my BB, I'm more than happy to check and see a free flop. If anyone had raised, I'd definitely fold preflop.

I flop trip Q with a horrible kicker. I absolutely cannot check this flop. I need to make a standard value bet to get value from my trips and also to get info on the opp's holdings (since everyone limped, they could have anything).
Bets postflop need to be sized based on the size of the pot, number of opps and board texture. With 4 or more opps in the pot, a standard bet is a pot-sized bet, so I will bet 150.

I now have an opp bet 20, then a raise to 60. I need to re-raise here (should have led) and the key here is the sizing of the bet. I need to size it between 3X the previous bet (180) and a pot-sized raise (290). With multiple opps still in the pot, I tend to go toward the upper end of this range, so I will raise to 290. I don't want to raise to less than this or I can be giving the opps the correct odds to try to outdraw me. If I do so and lose, it's my own fault that I lose the hand.

The turn should be a blank and with 2 opps now, I will make another standard value bet of 2/3 pot (300). Once again, I can't bet less than this or I can be giving the opps the right odds to try to outdraw me. The opp now min-raises. Here is where I need to make my decision in the hand... I either need to raise or fold. While I do have trips, I have the absolute worst kicker in the deck and since any of these opps could have me outkicked, I need to fold.

Early in tourneys, I need to play very cautious, as players will be staying in pots with anything. If I think that I may be behind, then I need to fold and wait for a better spot.... even in a turbo. The key with this hand is to make standard lead bets on the flop and turn and to muck to another raise on the turn.

Hope this helps and good luck at the tables.
