Hope everyone had a good festive season.

I can hardly believe it is 2014 already. I returned from a two week break and have played a few freeroll tourneys over the last couple of days and looked at the PSO forums/blogs, but am yet to set my goals for this year.

So I decided I would set up a 2014 blog thread and try to use it regularly for any general ramblings. I will try to write some proper blogs on specific topics in the PSO blog section - but here I will refer to all sorts of stuff.

Have a good year all!

First - a little look at where I started the poker year.

Not many assets in the Pokerstars cashier when I checked it on 1st January.

Total of $21.46 USD

87.50 FPPs

711,033.53 Play money chips.

I have small stakes of about $1.70 total in a couple of PSO Share offers so may get some back from those.

And alongside the ever valuable PSO member ticket I had just one WR2 ticket.

Good news so far in 2014

First good news +$16.00

I had not slipped back too badly in the Open Skill League rankings for December, having played my last game on the 18th, but I stayed in the top 200 to the end of the month. Very pleased that alongside my $1.00 earnings from the main league I attained 9th on the stats 'trickiness' leaderboard for an extra boost of $15.00.

As I have played very little real money games for VPPs over the last few months I will stay in the OSL this month and see if I can get some more cash from the League/Stats leaderboards.

First tourney success 27th of 9,000 for WR2

Over the last couple of days I have played in 16 Freeroll MTTs, including 4 OSL games, a Regional UKIPT satellite, the Online Poker Show Freeroll and ten of the various Astronomer Freerolls.

It was my third Hubble Freeroll that got me a deep run and my first WR2 ticket. So now I have 2 WR2 tickets I could play both this weekend, but most likely just today's Saturday afternoon NLHE game.

First promo boost +15VPPs

Getting my head round the new promos I realised I should just pick up the free VPP boost - only the minimum as I am bronze at the moment - but its all I could get so still welcome. I need to take advantage of all the promos however minimal.

Lots to look forward to - but will be taking it easy at the tables for a couple more months. This weekend is free so hope to play lots and get off to a good start to the year.

see you all on the felt.

2014 Goal Setting thought process - Sat Jan 04, 2014, 06:31 AM

Just to save an early entry in this thread - for ongoing edits - I shall start to think about some goals.

******More to come*****

Sunday 5th January 16:30 WET

Decided I have to set up a separate thread for my goals in the correct section.

Have done that now but might still put some random thoughts in here

Sat 4th January 17:00 WET

OK - forty minutes before my Saturday evening session - still musing on goal setting.

It will probably take all month - so I am setting myself an initial goal - to set my goals.

To have in place a twelve month plan for all of 2014 by the end of January.

And it must be a valid SMART plan.

The sooner the better - so as an incentive I am setting limits to my play this month which will be strictly applied until I have the plan finished.

I have set aside $20 for all my real money games this month.

$10 for cash games at 2NL. $10 for sitngo/tourneys up to $2.20

The other funds (about $17.46) will be ringfenced. I have moved them to British pounds and Euros

So real money in my cashier now looks like this.

$20.00 US Dollars
£10.00 GBP British Pounds
E00.78 Euros

Any cash I win from freerolls, FPP entries, Leagues/promos etc will not be available until the SMART plan is in place. I will probably bung it in the Euros bin. Any money received back from shares/staking will be available to recycle if I want to stake again, but otherwise not available to me.

So just $20 for fun low stakes this month until I have the plan planned.

Playing 3 Freerolls this morning & looking through some boomed hands from yesterday's success in the Hubble.

This was the crucial hand.

Sweat with JJ multiway - everybody hitting something by the turn but managed to fade all their river outs.

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...328_3F3FE58ABC

Shipping 17BBs you might think the Ax hands would think twice - especially as my previous double up hand with a preflop shove of AKo was pretty recent - as for the 89o call - they almost got there - but???

Way ahead preflop - PSO odds calculator gives me 60% preflop equity v these specific 3 hands, 72% on the flop - but by the turn it looked hairy - still had nearly 60% equity but I could see so many of their outs to improve I was just happy to take it.

Played pretty careful once in the top 100 and eventually crept into the ticket zone - top 72 - then never left it. Made some crucial folds and was about 60th when the bubble burst.

Exit hand was an easy post-bubble call v this villain and I was 67% favourite - but anyone can hit or miss.

Nice little morning session - but only half-hour break until the next OSL.

Developing a little spreadsheet to track stuff as lots does not record in PokerTracker.

Date/Start time/T.No/Game Type/Name/Entrants/Finish Position/Finish %

04/01/2014 09:42 840079763 2-7 NL Draw Ptolemy's 3,500 297 8.49%
04/01/2014 10:00 836133930 NL HoldEm Open Skill League 10,000 1,423 14.23%
04/01/2014 10:22 840079764 HORSE Sagan's 3,987 127 3.19%

That was my first finish inside the 1,440 bubble in the OSL so far this month.

Did not win a hand.

Two deep runs in the astronomer Freerolls - not my favourite ones - but was relaxed and focused so enjoyed the games even though did not make the tickets

Best hand of the morning - a flopped underboat at Limit Hold Em in the HORSE

Rookie mistake in the Open Skill League!

Bubble Hand.

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...156_962EDA6155

I was watching the lobby and as our table timebanked it went through 1440 during the hand.

But my stack was so small, when I called - and lost - I didn't make it and finished 1,491st.

A simple fold would have got me 3 more points.

Still - I'm not chasing the main league too much this month.

And I did hit a set on the turn - only to get rivered.

I'll have many much earlier exits this in January.

BOOMing hands all over the place.

Running well in a PSO Open Skill League game and another Hubble's Freeroll

Think these rockets guarantee me another WR2 ticket

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...886_32E3A08593

Like to think I was 80% to get the ticket anyhow - could even have folded.

With about 70 to the bubble running 8th.

Open Skill League down to about 230

then this

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...411_806AE8FA01

then this

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...461_ACB5810916

gotta stop booming these boring rockets hands.

down to 130 in OSL

At the break

20th of 94 in Hubble - going for top 72 for WR2 - then to beat yesterdays 27th - then an FT

75th of 122 in Open Skill League - going for the cent for 90th or better.

Gotta do something as training tool is all messed up again - silent bob (Dave) still trying tho.

I just completed my first January daily challenge - making 2.47VPPs from ZOOM 2NL Full ring.

Unfortunately - having been up over a dollar, I bust a stack.

So the first 'fail'of the year.

Today I came 31st of 10,000 and 14th of 9,000 in simultaneous MTTs - won one cent.

Then blew $2 off in a quick session of cash ZOOM.

Its alright - just confirms that I still suck at cash but can do OK on MTTs

****

Was just going through some hands from the OSL - so will dump a couple here.

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...337_A339781245

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...656_960BFE81FD

Those were my two unconventional hands attempting to get some shooter points for the stats leaderboard.

Did OK at trickiness last month, but not shooter - so trying it out given the opportunity.

Just haven't had many situations to try the tricky plays this month so far either - early days.

Both are highly dependent on the opponents at your table - hard to limp/reraise or check/raise and avoid limp or check call or fold when big stacks are shoving so much - hard to bet three streets when players fold or reshove to your first bet. Still getting my head round the stats leaderboards - but good potential extra value if I can work it all out and apply it - especially if I stay in the OSL with under 20VPPs for a few months. And it makes the OSL much less tedious.

More thinking, (less writing here) on tomorrow's sessions.

The stats leaderboard has not been updated - it always takes longer.

But my stats page shows from the first seven tourneys

Trickiness 7.37

Shooter Factor 9.27

so I have definitely made some correct adjustments.

Totals last month from 53 tourneys and 4020 hands were

Trickiness 53.36

Shooter Factor 4.71

Bad 2nd tourney.

3 way pot - all in with AQs - Against Ax and Qx - I have their high cards and 46% equity to treble up.

Inevitable exit soon after

still after half an hour finish was at 3735 - not terrible at this early stage,

Battling with a table full of Russians in this mornings OSL

One doubled me up.

But another one got me

http://www.boomplayer.com/en/poker-h...323_66879D81AE

Comprehensively crushed there - even picking up the flush draw left me a 70/30 dog.

Bad mistake on my part - should have instafolded to the big turn reraise.

A missed opportunity - doubled my starting stack which should be a solid finish well under the bubble.

Instead out early 2,989th for a few points lost.

More time for household chores though.

Just noticed the MyStats page has updated for my first 11 tourneys in Open Skill League.

Crucial stats

611 hands
63 hands played VPIP 10.31%
24 showdowns won
Post Flop Aggression Frequency 60.99%
Trickiness 15.31
Shooter Factor 10.21

Still waiting on this months Stats Leaderboard - but my figures look OK.

Nice hand from a Freeroll I was playing alongside the Open Skill League games tonight

I always seem to get the deep runs later in the day - this has been running nearly 4 hours now.

Not sure I can hang on for the WR2 ticket.

78th of 144 left - paying 56 - field was 4,908

Good practice for the variants in the PSO Series - TCOOP soon.

Trying to keep in the top 500 of OSL this month. Just outside right now.

MY LEAGUE STANDINGS
Username Prize Score
#1 PH Bwenas_Me $150/$1,500 2096.22
#2 RU andreikuz $100/$1,000 2074.68
#3 RU MissIronLedy $75/$750 2051.11
#4 UA Anyta belka $50/$500 2041.10
#5 UA lesnya4ok $30/$300 2029.85
#6 RO ciordy $25/$250 2027.61
- - - -
#504 GB EdinFreeMan $0.50/$2.50 1693.57

Even though I am using the OSL games for some experimentation, I think it should be
possible to stay in the top 500 and get my $1 too (under 20VPP payout).

Then I can also decide later in the month if I want to make the 20VPPs for the Premier Ticket.

I took the 15VPP top up and am making the 1VPP on odd days for the January challenge.

I want to stop on 19VPPs though in case I prefer another month in OSLfor February.

Can't believe I am really saying that.

Past midnight - had fallen back in Freeroll and limped in only to get shoved on.

Decided to gamble - call for a single card swap

Currently 41 of 111 - paying 56

could be another hour or more...
