Is this just bad luck or are there better ways to play it?

I feel like I lost the minimum possible without being too timid. The draw was very strong.

Hand is played just fine imo. You can't really raise the river, as villain will only continue (by shoving, usually) with a boat, unless he's the kind of payoff wizard that thinks trip aces is too strong to fold.
I'm not keen on raising earlier streets either, because villain usually has trips (or a boat) so he's never folding, so all you'd be doing is increasing the price of drawing, while having no fold equity.
