We are "in position" to players on our right. So we see them act before we make our decision (action in front of us) - good.

Players to our left have position on us. So we our "out of position" to them (action behind us) - bad.

Being in position (post-flop) means you get the chance to close the action and move on to the next street. This is a great advantage, because you can control the size of the pot, often by just checking back, or calling. You also have the option to re-open the betting with a raise, if you want to build the pot. If you're on the button, you're in position. If you're in the small blind, you have to act first on every street post-flop, so you're out of position (OOP), and this makes it very hard to control the size of the pot.
